Can we have fun with Order of Operations?

(8+4/22)-5*3?3=?

:emoji_nose:(8+(4/(2^2:emoji_nose:+(-5))*3)/3)
So if I read the video right the unambiguously right answer would always be
2 ^ 2 = 4
4 / 4 = 1
8 + 1 = 9
9 + (-5) = 4
4 * 3 = 12
12 / 3 = 4

why don't jokes work in base 8?
because 7 10 11

Three logicians walk into a bar, and the bartender asks "Would you all like a drink?"
The first one says "Maybe."
The second one says "Maybe."
The third one says "Yes."

You got the right answer, but it should have been 9 - (5*3/3) = 9-(5*1) instead of 9-5(1). The question is....is there a difference and will it always work either way?

The answer is no.

So try this....10-6*8?2=?

Ok, now I was probably taught wrong. with pedmas the d/m and a/s are interchangable. So to separate terms, at first glance, that would be

(-6*8)/2 + 10 = 10-6*8?2

-6 * 8 =
-48 / 2 =
-24 + 10=
-14 = 10-6*8?2

lay some truth on me. I hardly ever have to use order of ops. Most of my math is simple division of odd numbers.

FUCKING FRACTIONS. MY FOURTH GRADE TEACHER WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG.

It seems like PEDMAS would get you through 90% of non-technical math which you'll ever be faced with.

Edit: Fixed. I forgot to distribute.

Well see 1:40 in the video. As long as you only do any pair of numbers at a time it doesn't matter what order you do them in. That's the point I think.
I don't think so. In the above example 10-6*8?2=? if you do it your way: (10-6)*(8/2)=16. But if you do it by order of operations, you get 10-[(6*8)/2]=-14 or 10-[6(8/2]=-14. So in a way you're right you can pair them either way but only when interchanging addition and subtraction or multiplication and division, but you can't switch A or S with M or D.

My answer was was wrong because I didn't listen to the very video I linked. You can do it in any order so long as you remember some basics like multiplication distributes. (10-6)*(8/2) should be ((10*(8/2)) + (-6 *(8/2)) and THEN it doesn't matter what order you do it it.

You wouldn't distribute the 10 unless it was set up like (10-6)(8-2) and then you would use the FOIL method First, Outer, Inner, Last. (10*8) + (10*-2) + (-6*8) + (-6*2)

Shit, nevermind. You're right.

A maths thread??

Just rewatched this movie, it gets better and better with each subsequent viewing.

Dont get me wrong, it could have been 10x better if it wasnt for Lindelof. But otherwise it was still an amazing piece of sci-fi/horror.

For a little smack* Jones will do your math for you.

Edit - *I don't remember if Jones was a heroine addict in the movie, or if that was just the book
