There is a difference between a translation and an adaptation. In his adaptation Nolan is using the source material but culled things, added things and transformed things both to have the story connect with a modern audience and to emphasize the themes he wanted the movie to be about. The work of historians and translators informed the work of Nolan, but at the end of the day his job was to adapt the source material, to make it say what he wanted to say. People interested in what Homer had to say can read the Odyssey. The book did not suddenly disappear when Nolan's movie hit theaters. In fact it is pretty safe to say it created a renewed interest in the original text and its analyses / translations.

When the Flood narrative in Genesis was told it was to reinterpret a common story through a different lens. It wasn't reporting news. It assumed people were already familiar with the Flood.

This is no different.

The end of the ice age alone caused tons of apocalyptic floods - tons of cultures around the world have flood myths. Are some just retellings of oral history of the ice age stuff? Maybe. But human civilizations also happened to mostly crop up near rivers, which flood. Doesn't take god going "lol i gonna drown teh earth!" to come up with a story of a fucking flood since humans through out history take the mundane or normal and craft big complex stories about those being less mundane.

Fun anecdotal fact: I was considering checking this film in Imax in a nearby city and the original version (as in: not dubbed) in Imax at 1pm on Tuesday had only seats left on the front row or the edges of the theater...

From what I've seen, Catholics don't take the Bible literally in any sense. Everything is an allegory and the entire thing is fulfilled.

Have only really watched the one lecture on the Pacific northwest (LINK), so not sure what the geological evidence says about the English Channel, outside of the evidence of human habitation below the modern waterline. Those camp sites or villages could have been 1000s of years after the major glacial flood period in that area and instead been enveloped by slow sea level rise though.

QuickEdit: From poking around a bit, it looks like the current evidence of the last outburst flood into the channel is estimated to around 200,000 years ago, which would have put it long before any evidence for humans in Europe. Some Neanderthals, on the other hand, may have been killed by it.

...but nah, I meant the "ice age" people reference when they say "the last ice age" never ended. Instead it's actually the last glacier maximum people are thinking about, but that's not the term that was popularized over the years. As long as the Earth has a permanent ice cap, it's in an ice age (or some such, it's probably more complicated). Which is interesting to think about humans as being solely of an ice age.

It's because I watched that goofy Moonfall movie the other day. Instead of running away from the freezing, characters in the film were running away from gravity, and it was hilarious. He's like a big budget Dr.Boll.

I think I actually saw The Day After Tomorrow in the theaters back in college, back when going to the theater catching a matinee with your buddies was only a few bucks. When I think we were going to the movie theater at least once a week, and it's been since maybe 2020 since the last time I went.

I can't wait. If there's one thing Nolan has proven to the world it's that DEI drives billion dollar movies. It's just what the people want.
