Yeah nothing in the media landscape has changed at all since gone with the wind or the '80s. This is just as dumb as comparing Bill Russell to Michael Jordan without any context.

It will be at worst the number 3 movie of the year and then make revenue through streaming purchases, rentals, and licenses. No number 3 film in any year has been a failure. It would have been number two last year, one or two the year before, and one the year before that. Such good faith arguments here, and always from people who don't know shit about the box office except what they just googled 5 seconds prior.

By this metric, top gun Maverick was also a failure. I swear to God some people see an ugly black woman and you completely lose your ability to think. You can think whatever you want about the quality of the movie you'll never see but it did actually do amazingly well.

movies just sell a lot less tickets cuz there is more shit to do. in 1980s and 90s there was no internet and 10 channels of TV, if you wanted to finger bang annie the slut you either took her to the movies or you were rich and could finger bang chicks in your car

i'm catching up on RLM right now and mike even mentioned how he walked out on obsession not cuz he hated the movie but because a murder of teenagers were loud as fuck in the theater talking non stop. between shitty theatrical experiences like that, crazy ticket costs ($25-50 70mm imax ticket!), 30 min trailers, food costs/quality, travel time, the wildly short theatrical->streaming window its honestly a shock the box office hasn't really collapsed yet.

there are 25 70mm imax theaters in the USA. Tweny Five. And they won't build anymore, they haven't even made a new 70mm projector in like 50 years!!! Its absolutely insane how fucking retarded the entire theatrical system is.

The generation currently growing up is used to watching everything on their phone so likely when they start making movies they won't give a single fuck about theatrical experience.

Anything released pre VHS doesnt count in my mind since you could only see movies after buying a ticket. Then it took upwards of 2 years for a movie to release on VHS, that only started to change in the 90's and much more commonly after DVD's became a thing. Hell there was a time you could only rent new releases you couldnt even buy them.

Want a good example? Jurassic Park released July 11, 1993 and VHS didnt come out for it till fucking October 4, 1994. No torrenting, no vod, no other way to see it. Better buy your tickets to the dollar theater.

Yeah, exactly. Even super successful movies like The Odyssey are only taking 4 months to hit streaming rentals.

It's wild looking at the old box office numbers and you see a movie and think "damn, I thought that released the previous year" only to realize it's simply been in the theater for nearly a year. And I'm not even talking about the really old stuff but any big hit in the '70s and early '80s was like that. The idea of mega opening weekends really didn't exist, either. There were less theaters so films had to stay in them longer to get great returns. Nowadays for most blockbusters you've made most of your money after 4-6 weeks.

There is no better proof that Hollywood/the Movie Theatre experience has been failing for years than looking at actual ticket sales. How many more people on the Earth than when E.T. came out? And how many seats are getting filled compared to how many seats when E.T. came out?

There were cams back then. Why do you think they still call them cams instead of phones? You needed a vhs camcorder and people would copy the tapes and sell them at flea markets and shit. Became much more common with cd burners in the 90s.

The only truely terrible theatre experience I've had is in a theatre in the States lol.

A mom of a certain skin tone letting her kids run back and forth through aisle yelling. This was a rated r movie even.

This is when I learned when my girl says it's a "bad theatre" it has nothing to do with the quality snacks they serve. It's about how dark it gets in the theatre ifyaknowwhatimean.

that brings back memories, when i was in NC there was flea market that had a long narrow parking lot that went up hill. it was always a slog walking up to it. about every 10 cars, some guy would be hawking cams out of their trunk.
