Most likely they did some investigation into the possibility it was technological, that it could rendez-vous with earth with a maneuver. A prominent scientist was out there saying it was possible - seems prudent that may have at least investigated it. Even if they came to the conclusion that its not technological, it seems likely they'd want a lot of the details in the investigation to be classified because it may involve conjecture based on other classified information.

True. I'd assume obfuscating data gathering methods would also fall under that umbrella.
