DSN Season 1 isn't as bad as TNG Season 1, but I still wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Hell, I'd probably have them skip to the last episode of Season 2 (introducing the Jem'Hadar) for that matter.

Not to be _that_ guy, but I'd absolutely recommend the early seasons of Babylon 5 (which would launch two months after DSN) than DSN.

Going back over the list of episodes for season one you could go with the opening two-parter and then episode three (it has Garak) and call it a day. Even as someone for whom DS9 is their favorite Star Trek series there's a bunch here that are hard skips.

43 minutes of wet cardboard. When I first got the DVDs I let every episode run start to finish and I don't feel any need to do that again.

Yep that episode alone makes the season worth watching. Best Trek episode period.

It's weird how all of the big three of the 90s had different arcs:

TNG had a very weak beginning (all those leftover TOS scripts) and mostly skippable later seasons (most of their bigwigs were working on Star Trek: Generations).
DS9 had a weak beginning but just kept getting better over the years.
B5 had its plot twists written from day one (Vorlons, B4, Valen) but flagged toward the end as they had to compress multiple seasons down with reckless abandon as they didn't think they would be renewed, only to get a surprise renewal and have nearly nothing to cover in the final season as the overarching plotlines had already ended.

Yup, most Jake episodes sucked, Nog was eh - better once he got PTSD
Jake sucked because they were stuck with that no talent wakandan they cast as a child actor for seven years and he had constant jogger issues off the set. Still not as bad as any Troi or Tasha Yar episode....

Nog on the other hand, had a complete story arc over the entire series that is arguably the best character development in Trek history, going from a street nog, to aspiring cadet, to rockstart starfleet guy, to broken war vet, and finally war hero. Next to Garrak and maybe O'Brian, he was the best character on the show.
