It’s Bret Easton Ellis. If you’re only familiar with him through American Psycho, that would explain the confusion. I think twelve people saw Rules of Attraction with James Van Der Beek or Less Than Zero.

He pretty much focuses on consumerism, moral bankruptcy, social status, and all the things in American Psycho, but not typically with so much grotesque violence. Plus some gay since he's gay.
