The difference between "contributing to" and "causing" is splitting hairs. By "contributing to" you are helping to cause, just not the sole cause. It is rare anything has a single cause. If I say "McDonald's contributes to obesity" then I am saying "McDonald's causes obesity, but is not the sole cause". Those are analogous statements.
