Real supernatural badasses don't need KKK and knives.
Cultists/worshipers. Although this is not exactly "official" Lovecraft material, you can tell that the writers/director are fans of the genre and were strongly inspired by it. Cultists are a recurring item in that kind of mythos/lore.

Just finished. Definitely had an 80's horror, specifically Hellraiser type vibe to it. I enjoyed it.

In this day and age, it's nice to see a horror movie that isn't something put together by morons in their backyard. So in that regard this movie was great. Still nothing near classic territory like Thing, but a solid movie, worth the watch.

I liked it just fine but I've seen every one of the films it cribbed from and it doesn't do anything better than any of them. The amount that they took from The Beyond is downright embarrassing. Also, if you haven't seen The Beyond (Lucio Fulci) go watch The Beyond.

I'm still happy that movies like this are being made but this one never managed to transcend the material it was borrowing from and become its own thing.

I agree with this. I enjoyed the movie, but I felt like I really, really wanted to like it more than I did. Like there was just something slightly missing that kept it from being one I run to tell other people to watch. I think Arbitrary's summary about it not transcending the material it borrowed from is the perfect explanation I was lacking.

I still recommend watching it to people like us, but my average mouth-breathing coworkers, not really.

I liked it.

I'm glad people are at least making movies like this still. Mainstream horror is mostly either: haunted house, possession, or slasher flicks. Cosmic horror movies like this are super rare.

Caught this on netflix tonight, definitely a solid low budget horror that clearly used its budget for practical effects and some really great throwback body horror. Clearly some cronenberg and hellraiser influences with a nice ambiguous final scene that wants me to see more of it.

I totally got a Phantasm vibe from the final scene and yes, really enjoyed the nod to the 80s practical effects. I feel a lot of today's horror really suffers from overuse of CGI (and of course jump scare); to the point that it is a perceived substitute for a decent setup/story. It was also nice to see some generally creepy and nebulous story elements that leave you thinking (the brain is quite capable of coming up with some truly terrifying material when left to fill in the gaps).

Pretty much this. If you dug these kinds of 80s horror films it is a solid movie and I enjoyed it.

Personally, I was hyped because it looked like a throwback to when horror was good before the decline that lead into torture porn and then found footage becoming the norms (there are obviously exceptions throughout the years but there was a good span in the 70's and 80's where they were knocking horror out of the park pretty regularly). It has a John Carpenter vibe to it and I'll give it to them for nailing some really creepy practical effects. There wasn't really even bad acting and they set a good stage for what, it appeared, they were attempting to do but it felt more like a seriously missed opportunity than anything else.

I didn't fell like it was awful, I really like the era of horror movies that it was paying homage to, but it was definitely a bit disappointing for what I had built it up to be. It definitely felt like the creators knew where they wanted this to go but, perhaps, bit off a bit too much and a possibly great horror movie got lost in a few unnecessary elements.

I'd echo most of the responses, if you like John Carpenter films and 70's/80's horror you'll find it enjoyable but it's almost exclusively for that niche.

When the creators tackle another project I have no doubt that it will improve on this and they have the craftsmanship and technical know-how to grow their craft into something potentially great.

It has a definite John Carpenter vibe, but with a nice sprig of Lovecraft thrown in. It was a pleasant relief from the borderline grindhouse or Ed & Lorraine Warren based fare that dominates lately.
