I am getting close to 100 films seen in 2025 (but a bunch are not new releases), but my Top 10 would pale in comparison to my 2012 one posted earlier in the thread. Let's pick 5 for the fun of it:
Way above the rest :
Afternoons of Solitude (Tardes de soledad) : a kind of anti-documentary about an actual bull-fighter. Anti-documentary in the sense that it explains nothing, comments on nothing and just lets bull-fighting be its own critique as we dive in its supremely odd and ritualized universe. Riveting.
After that :
Caught by the Tides : an experimental film by Jia Zhang Ke, editing together 20 years of scenes and outtakes of his previous films to weave a meta love story that has the mutation of modern China as a backdrop.
Rewrite : A japanese comedy that revisits the classic tale of The Girl Who Lept Through Time from the point of view of its writer.... but does it really? Funny and very clever time travel romp.
Harvest : a Scottish community of farmers in the Midles Ages is crumbling under the combined pressure of outsiders and modernity.
The Ugly Stepister : A norvegian ... gore-comedy(?) that revisits the classic tale of Cinderella from the point of view of, well, the ugly stepsister.
Not mentioned, as these are 2024 movies for the rest of the board : The Brutalist and A Complete Unknown.
Honorable mentions : U are the Universe (Ukrainian SciFi dark comedy), The Gesuidouz (Japanese dramedy about a failing punk band trying to write a good song while in the countryside).
