Sounds like you were building in Black Forest, and it got dark out.

That or there was some kind of event at your location. When this happens there's usually a title on the screen and a red circle around your area on the minimap.

I'm not even playing on that server and just reading this is stressful, lol.
Yeah after some reading I figured it was something like that, just regular spawns not the event. Apparently borders of biomes can be wonky too, I was both on border and in forest. I'd been in forest before, but nothing like that happened.

Figured out how to use custom map seeds for gportal server, I'm just gonna start fresh world & character.

Black forest mobs (sans trolls, laaaaawl) are very survivable in deerskin/etc from the pre-eikthyr stuff, but yeah having to mess with them and getting no benefit (nothing good unlocks that you can use until you can mine bronze) is hella lame. In my solo game, I'm still mining up bronze to max upgrade everything I have before boating over to the boss for that tier, and my current base is in the Meadowlands literally within short visual range of the Black Forest. I'm building up poison defense mead (created my first fermenter because it wasn't super obvious that the cauldron unlocked and mead was a thing until I was trying to just max out my workbench(s) and noticed some new stuff. The upgrade spam when you first do something can be a bit much and a bit fast, and it's easy to miss stuff. Which I did.

Murdering trolls in their caves seems slightly bugged atm; there probably needs to be some mechanism that blocks you from zoning out of a place if you are actively aggroed (or it follows you out, or something) because it's -very- simple to just pop in, shoot a couple of arrows, pop out, and repeat for almost zero risk kills.

Secure portal. This may be the dumbest thing I've done so far in the game :D

Looks great though Quineloe Quineloe :)

Our unnecessary build goes to my friend who built a cart-compatible staircase to Moder.

We've only killed him once and have no need to kill him again or mine the mountain for silver.

But hey, we have some stairs! ;)

if you play only one, play Subnautica.

If you play 2. play fallout 4.

This is still EA. I'm kindof hoping updates flush out some of my issues. I am slightly surprised theres only been minor hotfixes.
and if you want to play with friends, play valheim.

if you want to be forever alone, but have a good time, try subnautica.

If you are a sadist that wants to be alone while suffering, try fallout 4.

Not even sure how Fallout 4 ( a game that I enjoyed to some extent btw) is in the same category as valheim or subnautica tbh.

We have yet to find the Rune Stone guiding us to Modor. Hoping Modor isnt near as bad as Bonemass is with just two people. Felt like we shot Frost Arrows at Bone for 10 minutes at least. I was thinking it would be easy like Groot was so I didnt cheese it with structures/moats. Boy was that a mistake - I think we aggroed everything in a 50 mile radius as we kited his ass around. Weird switch up on Modor with arrows also. Obsidian Arrows are supposedly better against Modor, but I would have thought Fire Arrows would have been the bee's knees against a Frost boss. Since Modor flies, Im not sure I know how we can cheese him (unless he doesnt break through stone?)

IMO archery is always cheese in this game.
I get the problem, balancing ranged vs melee in a real time game is an almost herculean task for any game developer and unless you don't resort to ultra cheap mechanics against ranged (You will not evade me...) you'll have a very hard time not massively favoring bow cheesing everything while also maintaining bows as a legit weapon.

Personally I think they should just make arrows wildly ineffective against some enemies, instead they did the opposite - bows work on literally everything, it's some melee weapons that just do nothing against some enemies.

Bow isn't all that great in this game in my experience. Arrows also take up precious inventory space.

You can pretty much perma stun crap with Frostner. The knife also seems to be able to accomplish that as well after a few fast hits in succession.

Never quite figured out exactly how the backstab mechanic triggers but it doesn't seem to actually be related to hitting from behind, but rather whether or not the enemy is stunned/player attack chains.

The knife also attacks very fast and costs very little stamina. In group settings its probably my favorite weapon to use because once you trigger backstab chains it does a ton of damage.

I think backstab triggers when the enemy doesn't have a ! over it's head. Basically it isn't aware of anyone nearby. Even w/ archery, it's why the initial hit does so much damage, it's triggering the 3x backstab that's on bows.

Actually that's just double damage whether damaged or shield parry staggered, has nothing to do with backstabs. I think those are applied to unaware enemies.

Everything Ive shot at the Stone Golem in mountains comes up as grey damage (ineffective), versus using blunt melee weapons which are white damage. Though, I havent shot Silver or Obsidian arrows at it to be fair.

Ineffective still kills them eventually, but they are so easy to abuse with mountain pathing it's a risk free kill. Of course you can melee them down faster - but you better don't miss a single parry.

Another thing is that wooden arrows are dirt cheap, yet it doesn't seem like they are bad. I can shoot down a drake with 4 wooden arrows, or three ironhead ones. I don't get the armor system of enemies in this game. Or how bow damage is calculated. I should try how well a club would be doing against end game enemies.

You can see the damage on both the weapon and the arrow. Add them together and voila, you got it. There's also weapon damage types (blunt, slash, pierce) with blunt destroying undead, slash murdering 'unarmored' shit, and pierce (which arrows are) going through armor for the most part. It's a classic RPG system with each type for each situation. Bonemass? Blunt. Farming wolves? Slash. Killing Lox? Pierce.

Their armor system for NPCs is probably the same as for PCs

AC - Damageoutput(roll within range) = Damage

So if the mob has 25 ac (probably common for a lot of stuff) and you hit it with a slash for 75 damage then it does 50 damage. If you pierce it for 50 damage and it has 50 ac it'll do 50 damage.

I'm not sure if that's the EXACT math, but it's based on that formula. That's why arrows feel so strong, because they pierce which mostly, if not completely, negates boss armor. The one big difference is Bone Mass. Needle Arrows were doing like 11 damage to it whereas a wooden cudgel was hitting it for like 30 because of blunt bonus.

I hate how sometimes the bottom lip of a doorway catches me. I tried putting stairs to the bottom you I can just run inside, but that doesn't seem to really help. So now I jump through doorways, LOL.

Tankards need to be weapons for Unarmed. Dual-wield Tankards and just run around punching shit. This needs to happen.

Log physics still makes me LOL. "Viking Logging Simulator Online"

Surtling cores need to stack to 50.

I've caught myself on fucking fire from campfires about a million times now, and it's just kind of annoying.

I wish there was character customization.

Make sure to use a half wall when buiding multi story buildings so you don't clip the ceiling while wielding a weapon.

Fires are great for instantly getting rid of wet debuff. Just walk in it, walk out. Wet gone!

Hopefully with the next big content they rehaul the inventory system. Having both very limited slots AND weight is dumb. It's one or the other, but not both. I'd rather have 10 slots available with 30 iron ore in each slot or 50 slots that are empty because I have 30 iron ore on me, but I can keep seeds I find. The mix now is very painful and their encumberence mechanic is pretty rough as you stop moving completely rather than just slow to a crawl.
