Do any of these combinations work for playing Blu Ray ISOs with full menu support? I have a HTPC that I use windows media center and Arcsoft TotalMedia 5 combined with some other stuff for artwork etc. I absolutely love it. At this point I'd like to be able to stream those ISOs to my bedroom. I have ps3 media server installed on the HTPC to stream to a PS3 in the bedroom currently, but it only works well with MKV files. It won't do ISOs with full menu support. I don't want to convert to MKVs because I like the 1:1 copy with menu support, so that isn't an option. I'd build another HTPC before I'd do that. But if there is a $100 option like roku + plex, I'd take that option for simplicity and cost since it's just a bedroom setup. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance.
You want a Popcorn Hour. They are a bit pricey but insane when it comes to throwing media at them.

Yeah PLEX on Roku is ugly and shitty (and the web client is pretty nice actually). I always just use the search feature anyway for whatever video I want to find. I use my cell phone/tablet as a remote so I can use a keyboard.
Glad to hear that people that actually use it also think the interface sucks. I just got to see it on a friends setup and I thought they needed a lot of work. Web client for library work looks alright so there is hope.

I'm spoiled by using XBMC for sure though.

I know this thread is about streamers, but if anyone is interested in building an HTPC, this site:http://assassinhtpcblog.com/has any and all information you could ever want. Hardware, software, and setup are all covered. I used the free guides at first, but I got so much out of them that I donated to get the paid guides because I thought he deserved it. I hope it helps someone as much as it did me.

It's not hard drive speed that's the problem. The network transfer speed on most NAS devices are much slower than you think they would be. They may have a gigabit port, but actual speed is nowhere close to that.
My Qnap, which must be close to 4 years old now, can send files at around 70MB/sec, with just some run of the mill WD Green drives in RAID5 (mix of them actually, I think there's a couple Seagates as well). That's damn near saturating the network.

Never had an issue with the array dropping drives, either. Well once, but the drive was defective. It's also awesome how you can pull out a drive and put in a new larger one, and it automatically resizes the array.

Hmm, briefly looked over their webpage because while I love the Boxee, if it ever breaks I'm not opposed to buying up. Please tell me a little more about this. I might find some of the answers by digging deeper but I'm not seeing them right off. Found a comparison sheet between models but still not sure what all is going on.

Am I correct in assuming that it is basically a Boxee on steroids?
Do they have their own remotes or is it strictly ios/android apps? That would sort of annoy me because I like not having to find my phone to watch shit. (EDIT: Found it, yeah they have a separate remote.)

Thanks.

Yeah you found the answer on the remote thing. They are basically "the" media player without building a PC double their price.

I have a boxee and my roommate just picked up a Roku+plex. Good lord the UI is awful. Only showing 5 movies/shows at a time is ridiculous on a 50" or larger TV. There's a post from their devs saying that they use some screen template built in to the roku and they would need to write their own to fit any more titles on to a single screen, but I have no idea what that would take.

That said, the Boxee has been really, really, really disappointing with their lack of support since release. Even though they announced no future updates it doesn't look like it costs any less for some reason.

well Got my boxee box today. turned it on and it won't leave the grey loading screen haha. fuck my luck ive tried everything even reseting it etc. Not gonna give up though gonna return it and get another one prolly just a screwed up box
I'm guessing you've already returned it, but I had this happen to me once after the boxee installed an update. If you hold the power button for around 6 seconds it should open into a service mode that'll allow a factory reset. Might be worth trying to save yourself the hassle.

On another note, I've had a Raspberry Pi sitting around collecting dust for a few weeks, so I decided to try putting xbmc on it. I followed the tutorialhereand have been relatively impressed with the performance. One issue I ran into, however, is the USB port is far too underpowered to supply any heavy load. My 2.5" portable hard drive would bring the voltage down enough to reset the unit (I guess I'm lucky I didn't blow any fuses in the port). As a media streamer, it definitely needed to be overclocked (was stuttering before that), but seemed quite smooth afterwards. The other downside is it doesn't appear that Netflix is available. Hulu apparently is, but it looked like there was more monkeying around than I was really interested in today. All in all, not bad for a $35 computer.

Big bump for this, but I figured I'd share in case anyone else finds this information useful.

My boxee has been acting up a little lately, nothing big but to the point where I figured I might jump the gun and buy a replacement anyway because I cut the cable cord a year ago and I wouldn't have shit to watch if it straight up dies. Did some research, read over this thread again, and made the decision to move up to the Popcorn Hour A400, the latest model. After using it extensively this weekend I'm pretty sure I will be returning it. Here is why (spoilered for length):

1) Network setup for the Popcorn Hour (PCH) with my Synology NAS was a bit of a pain, but eventually I got it set up and I'd theoretically never need to touch it again. However, in order to use the "wall of movies" option (like PLEX, Boxee, etc. have) the network share HAS to be the root of a particular drive. In other words, I can't just assign it "S:\Movies" like I did with the Boxee, I have to assign "S:\" and then put some text files manually into every top-level folder on S: that I don't want the jukebox (that's what they call the PLEX-like system) to scan (like porn). I CAN assign the movies subfolder as a network share, but then it is impossible to ever use the jukebox, I can only navigate to it directly. Which also means it is never going to list out which episodes of which shows I have either. Boxee generates the cover pics, descriptions, episode listings, etc. no matter where the share is. On top of that, PCH stores all that shit manually on my hard drive, whereas Boxee, with less memory and stats, apparently is just fine storing all of that shit on itself. Or at least, I've never seen it store anything on my PC. PCH immediately started shitting up every directory on my drive with that stuff.

2) When generating the jukebox info (i.e. determining which movie/show it is), the Boxee conveniently tells you which files it had no clue what to do with. You can go see a list of them and easily tell it what they are. One of the best features is telling it that every file in that folder belongs to the same series, so it will attempt to figure them out all at once given that info. A good example is The Ultimate Fighter show. Sometimes the torrents are labeled the.ultimate.fighter.s17e13.scenegroup.mkv, while others are simply labeled tuf.1713.scene.mkv. Boxee will find that 1713 and realize it probably means the same thing as the first file, whereas PCH MUST be renamed to the s17e13 format. Furthermore, many torrented movies have samples included. Boxee most of the time puts them in the "no clue" area and you can just leave them. PCH labels them as the movie most of the time, or even another movie altogether. I had a sample of Shutter Island that it decided was some movie called Semen Sample I believe. So I navigated to it and deleted it from the jukebox...which then deleted it from my hard drive. Which is a big problem if you're still seeding the file.

3) I rarely use the jukebox feature on the Boxee though, so I might be able to live with it if that were the only issue. But I noticed that a good chunk of my movies didn't show up on the jukebox OR simply navigating to them via the network share. I finally figured it out, and it was because they were .rar files. I commented earlier in this thread that Boxee being able to stream straight from the rar files was awesome, and realizing that I'd have to unrar way too much shit was pretty disheartening. PCH apparently has never had rar support, nor does it look like it is likely to ever get it because that is a "pirate" thing. No one ripping their own collection rars their movies, so they see no reason to support it because only pirates do that. Not an official statement from PCH mind you, but that was the defense always used by the defenders.

4) The Boxee remote is a bit sparse, but it does what you need it to do honestly. However, I was pretty excited to get a full-featured remote with the PCH. Who doesn't want better control over what they watch? One thing that has always bugged me about the Boxee is the inability to watch it in search mode like a real DVR. Particularly for shit like UFC events that are 3 hours long, but only like an hour of actual content. With the Boxee you just sort of have to guess, whereas the PCH had true fast-forward viewing capability. However, if I sped it up too much (8x or more) hitting play would jump the time forward 30 seconds from what I could see. Still, it is a huge step up from what the Boxee offers.

That being said, the layout of most of the buttons is fairly fucking dumb. The fast forward, reverse, play, pause, stop...all over the place. VHS remotes had that shit mastered 20 years ago, how hard could it be? One of the most used buttons in setting up the thing, the "Home" button, is located in an unintuitive spot two rows below the 7 on the number pad.

Not to mention, the Boxee remote is blu-tooth, so it works from anywhere in my apartment. PCH isn't. It was like my fucking big toe would block half my button presses or something. It was really annoying, as if it had to be directly pointed at it and not more than 30 degrees off-center. My TV has far better range on the remote, this was by far the narrowest I've seen in years.

5) No matter which way you navigate to a file, the Boxee treats it as the same file, updating the cover art if you want, remembering your last watched spot, checking it off if you've already watched it, etc. The PCH treats them as completely separate entities from what I could tell, and only randomly decided that it would remember the last spot I watched from. It also didn't give you an option to restart from the beginning until after the clip started from your last spot, whereas the Boxee lets you choose before it starts.

6) I mainly use them for streaming local content that I've downloaded, but it is nice to have things like Netflix available because the Boxee interface for Netflix is light years better than the one that came with my TV. PCH will NEVER have Netflix it seems, and that's pretty much a fact. So if Netflix is a deal-breaker for you, PCH is not the solution for you.

To be completely honest the PCH is much snappier in most of the menus, and looks cooler, and the jukebox thing is pretty slick when it is set up properly and works the way it is supposed to. But for costing more, it does fewer of the things that the Boxee does, and seems to force you into doing things a very specific way if it actually does them. That's really disappointing to me because even the new BoxeeTV (the newer version of Boxee Box) is more focused on cloud-DVR and streaming crap, and less on streaming from my computer, which is what I use it for 99% of the time. So it seems like my only real solution is to buy another Boxee or build myself an HTPC for substantially more. Kind of a pisser that there isn't anything better after a couple of years (granted, I have not used Roku or WD but from all my reading they won't be anything I want over the Boxee).
TL;DR If you mainly stream local content obtained from newsgroups or torrent sites, or Netflix has to be on it, don't even bother with the Popcorn Hour A-400, just get a Boxee or whatever you prefer instead. It isn't worth the extra money, and is pretty strict about the things you can do with it. Hopefully the return policy isn't a bitch.

If anyone knows of a "super Boxee" that isn't a PCH, or a Dune (really just HTPC for those that don't want to build them), let me know.

Along those lines, what kind of blu-tooth remotes are available for HTPCs? I absolutely refuse to use my phone as a remote because to me that just seems lame. With my old Comcast remote I could flip channels, fast-forward shows, etc. all without looking at the remote. With a phone there aren't any physical buttons so you'd have to look. If I could get a decent BT remote I'd consider going HTPC and installing the Boxee software on it if that is still available. But that even seems like a bit of a waste, I should just buy another fucking Boxee then! Halp!

Have you thought about an android box ? I have something likethis(~50$ on ebay) that runs android 4.1 with xbmc on top of it. You also get PlayStore access so it can do much more than a Roku or whatever.

edit : should mention i don't use any streaming service and use it only for torrent playbacks.

Dude, just build a cheap HTPC and use XBMC. XBMC is what Boxee was based on and with a HTPC you can do so much more. As far as remotes go I use a Logitech harmony, best remote ever.

I just use Mobile Mouse Pro (for iPhone in my case, but there is an Android version as well) with a laptop plugged in by HDMI. It's tough to beat that for simplicity. Just move the mouse, double click on what you want to watch. Done. Not quite as elegant as a full remote, but a hell of a lot simpler, and you can type with it too. Works with Linux, too, so cheap HTPCs (like my Chromebox) can use it.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm still not sure what my best solution is, but at least I've got some ideas now.

I've actually got a spare 64GB SSD drive and a NAS, so I might price out an HTPC just to see what I could get away with. As far as the Harmony, I have an older one that I don't use anymore because it eats fucking batteries like candy. If I bought another one it would definitely be the recharging one...but last time I looked, that alone cost almost as much as a new fucking Boxee! I realize it has greater uses than just this, but since I don't have cable and rarely watch physical disks anymore, the most extra it would be used for is turning on my TV and controlling my receiver. So the remote might have to wait awhile. I need something though, don't want to use keyboard and mouse.

Question, does XBMC have the direct navigating to network shares that Boxee does? Because that's honestly how I watch the majority of my programming anyway.

Yeah, if you don't want to use library mode you can just browse to your shares. XBMC scans your shares on start up/command by default so if I download something while it's already running I normally just browse to it and let it scan it into the library next boot.

Glad this thread got active again. I am looking to cut the cable at the end of the month and came to Rerolled to see if I could find anything on it. I'm pretty sure I'm going with the Roku + Netflix and PlayOn. For those who have already cut the cable, any advice or pointers you wished you had known? What about PlayOn, anyone here use it? Any other services I should take a look at?

Cool, I'll check that out. After being spoiled with a blutooth remote I'm going to at least search around for one, but a cursory search didn't leave me feeling very inspired. I'll worry about that when I decide if I'm going HTPC or not.

I recently built a NUC machine for XBMC using Windows 8.

It is absolutely great.
I was looking at that since I have no need for storage on the actual device aside from an SSD, and really just want it to work like a Boxee for the most part. Would you care to list out the components you used, or at least point me in a direction if it would be a pain to gather that info? Also, does yours use IvyBridge or is it the celeron with added video? I'm assuming whatever you have streams 1080p (wired) without a hitch as well.

That's pretty much exactly what I want, so if you're up for sharing, either here or via PM, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks!
