Here in Dallas, we have around 1-2" of accumulated sleet. Which of course means the whole city is pretty functionally shut down. I might get out in it this afternoon to scout the area and see how good/bad it is. Most of the freeways are moderately clear already due to traffic. Looks like the vast majority of any precipitation is done with, but we're not going to get back over freezing to start melting shit until Tuesday afternoon. No power loss yet (knocking on wood) and that's my only real concern.

Now I start debating if I want to try to drive to San Antonio tomorrow for the meetings I have booked down there. A certain someone in this house is pretty dead set against that idea. heh

Athens GA is getting some more freezing rain this afternoon but it is supposed to convert to straight rain. The temperature is kind of odd as it shows it increasing into the evening before dropping back down early morning. Tomorrow it gets back up to 38 but the sun will also be out. Hoping the roads will be passable by Tuesday morning.

Cooled off. Wind blew with gust of about 40mph for a while then the temp dropped from 70 to 35 in about half an hour. Had a tornado warning. Now it's right at freezing.

This ice storm is amateur hour driving tbh. I haven’t even gotten the satisfaction of seeing a single pickup truck driving 70 wipe out yet.

On that site I linked you can flip a switch to see traffic cameras. I got some good entertainment yesterday watching slip'n'slide sled race driving... Today it seems to have quelled down. The major highways between towns all seem to have a single lane cleared by a combination of the Dept of Transport and vehicles driving on them.

Mrs. Haus Mrs. Haus is maintaining that I'm not taking either car out there because of "those other idiots" (as opposed to THIS idiot...)

Stayed off the roads today. We have the last of the system going through now with a sleet/rain mix. Hope the roads clear up tomorrow as I have to drive on them at 6:00 AM Tuesday morning.

Facebook is the bane of my existence. My wife was telling me we had to look out for exploding trees all around us because it's so cold. Apparently some asshole decided to reframe frost cracking as OH NO EXPLODING and grossly exaggerate the prevalence. It gets this cold here probably once a year, somehow all the trees haven't "exploded."
I've never seen a tree explode, but today is a really bad day to be anywhere underneath trees in my neighborhood. No snow, but 2-3 inches of sleet/ice on the ground and about half an inch of solid ice on everything else. It looks like limbpocalypse here. I went out front for just a few seconds twice today and both times got to watch bigass limbs crack and fall in neighbors' yards. My front yard has been spared so far, probably thanks to the tree trimming a few weeks ago, but I have a few limbs the size of small trees to clean up in my back yard now.

Last few hours of the storm, frankly all we need is the plows to come through cause it isn't too bad otherwise. Pure snow would have been more debilitating than this, sleet doesn't stack high it bounces and pushes itself off so shine some sun on any ice tomorrow and be thankful it was only a third of a storm.

If you live in an area with lots of trees like I do (landlocked in the national forest) when an ice storm hits you really can't sleep at night due the crashing sound of limbs falling through the trees and then hitting the ground. It's quite loud when it is semi quiet. Pine trees are self pruning so a well managed stand you really only get limbs falling out of the top 1/3 of the tree so long way down to hit shit and build up steam. The bottom 2/3 will already have lost their limbs over time if it's well managed.

Thank God the weather is on the ball. Low of 19 forecast and it said "dress warmly", nah I was thinking of going out and skinny dipping.

I had that happen a few years ago when I was getting ready to sell my old house. A branch ended up nailing my detached garage. When I went over to inspect it, it was like out of a movie - every 5-10s another branch would come down somewhere in the neighborhood. In retrospect, it was probably really dumb to be outside at all that day.

Then, like out of a different movie, some of the shadiest dudes I've ever seen in my life started coming out of the woodwork offering to remove and cut up the branch. Thankfully my neighbor already had a legit business coming over to quote, so, I piggybacked on that. Since I was going to make an insurance claim, I wanted some more qualifications than: "has chainsaw".

I am supposed to drive from Dallas to San Antonio tomorrow. Looking at the chaos still ensuing on some of the state trafifc cams I think I'm about to pivot those to zoom meetings...

Good friend of mine is a big muckity muck at all the DFW Medical City Hospitals and is on "bring the nurses to and from work" duty since he has a big ass F 250. I told him I'm willing to make sacrifices for the community if any of em need a ride in my big ass RAM over here on the west side of town.

My friend does that. He said he's constantly being aggressively propositioned by horny nurses. One of those things you don't find out about until after you're married.

I'm a bright side kind of a person, well not really. Looking at the extended forecast the 8th high is forecast to be 74 lol. Just yesterday it was s upposed to be a week or more of never reaching above freezing which we normally get that high in a week, now it's all highs for a week of 50+.

Kind of like the old "forecast is right 50% of the time, every time". It's either going to rain or it's not.

Ahem. Fuck cold weather. I moved to Houston thinking I was going to get away from this dumb shit. Now I want Trump to annex Mexico as a territory so that I can live further South and never have to deal with this dumb shit. Give me 100 degrees F and 100% humidity over this dumb shit.

Plow came through for 1.5 lanes in the neighborhood, road to the highway is a very tight 2 lanes with shoulders/turn lanes untouched. Bare minimum but it is possible to go somewhere after de-icing the cars and driveway. Everyone on an incline had the sleet roll down to the bottom and the ice is 3x thicker there, but the sun is already out today and supposed to have it tomorrow.

7" snow projected for next Saturday already, but temperatures go above freezing once that storm passes through.
