I don't think putting the entire country on Ozempic is any sort of solution and even if glp-1s are miracle drugs with literally no negatives, there's no way we get the entire country mandated to hop on them.
1 in 8 people are now on glp-1s - which is nuts to think about.

That said, even if the side-effects of them end up being pretty gnarly in the end, it's probably still not as bad as the side effects of being a fatty. I do think they're going to end up being overused/overprescribed for people who are on the edge of "fat", however. The dude who is 5'10 and 300 lbs.? Sure, he probably gets a net benefit. But the dude that is 6'0 and 225? Eh, he probably just needs to have some self discipline and eat a little less, increase his physical activity, etc.

Yeah just hang out on any glp1 subreddit and you'll see people that were definitely just chubby or whatever on them. Problem is if you have the money you can just buy them, so there's really nothing stopping anyone from using them.

I do think they're a net benefit in general. The main side effect of obesity is early death and this will hopefully help with that.

Saw an old coworker I hadn't seen in 6 months. She went from 215 to 125. All from her thyroid. Didn't change her eating habits or routine. Just started taking thyroid meds. So get your thyroids checked!

It's simple logic. You said "Overeating kills more people than drugs"

Equating any death of a fat person to "overeating is the cause of death" is the same bullshit they used to "covid is the cause of death" anybody who died who possibly maybe had covid at some point. People die. All the time. Fat people, skinny people, junkies, drug free people. Everybody.
ok, fair enough. I'll counter with some stats and say that not only will being fat help kill you earlier than you would have died otherwise, it will also make everything more shitty on the way there (well, except delicious, delicious mealtime, obviously). You don't die of a pizza overdose, but too many pizzas make (nearly) everything else more likely to kill you. Sure, maybe a bad drug habit has more acute effects, but the majority of people are fat now, which is absolutely crazy. Growing up, I was the fat kid and the other kids were normal (well, there was always one fatter kid so I was never the fat kid, thank God). Now? I'm the normal one, and that's pretty fucked up tbh. And again, people actually stop doing drugs, but very few people stop being fat (glp's aside). I say all this, and I'm still fat. It's fucking insidious.

Bro the government can’t just assume everyone is a member of our elite EverQuest bodybuilder forum
I never really got to be a kid like I wanted. Life got too real, too quickly. So, I’m making up for it now by fucking around with old games, sports, and cars. I’ll grow up when I’m 70.

What advice would you give someone that destroyed their lives with drugs?

Why can you not give that same advice to fat people? It's the same problem, no?

Most people have absolutely no idea how many calories they burn in a day, and are completely incapable of estimating it.

As a result, most people have no idea how many calories they consume in a day. There was a study recently that showed that your metabolism actually doesn't change that much as you age, the only thing that changes is your activity level. When I was in my 20s I was pulling 2000lb pallets around grocery stores all day. Now I manage people who do similar work. It's kind of a no brainer that I started putting on weight. I lost muscle mass and I lost a fuckload of activity.

When I started lifting 2 months ago, my expenditure went from 2400 calories a day to 2550. That's a difference of 2 eggs. That's what people mean when they say you can't out exercise your mouth.

The ONLY way you lose weight is eating less. Ideally, you just eat more of higher quality foods which require you to eat less.
Lifting should increase your expenditure way more then 150 cal/day..

yes, most people can't track expenditures. it is of course really hard really. you would need to track your bowel movements, cardo, basal, and muscle building.

ain't no one burning their shit, to determine how much kcals were in it.
and tracking muscle gain is also fairly difficult, and more of a post hoc thing that can measured weekly, but not one done on the fly daily.

Muscle gain is one of the big elements missing in the average person tracking. A fitbit/garmin/apple watch that tracks cardio burns isn't actually tracking muscle gain, its just tracking energy use for activity itself.
it has no idea if you jogged flat for 2 hours, or did hill sprints.

Weight lifting is actually super effective at fat loss. (lets be clear thats what we are talkin about, not overall "weight loss") 150cal sounds like the cardio duration for that 20min workout. NOT the muscle generation which is going to burn thousands of calories over the next 3 days.
then of course on top of that, basal energy burn will increase with muscle mass. as a 180lb man with 15% fat will just naturally burn more then a 180lb man with 30% fat.

Of course you can, both people should stop doing the unhealthy thing. Generally speaking, the fat people won't though. It's like everything else; the specific versus the general are entirely different discussions. An individual might finally decide to fix his shit, regardless of the population level likelihood. You can't say "everyone should just fix their shit" though, or at least it's entirely useless. The 'everyone' problem is societal and requires societal adjustment.

So yes, fatty is fat because of a lifetime of bad decisions, and he needs to be blamed and shamed into being less fat.. (by the rapidly decreasing number of people who aren't fat I guess).
But at a broader level, there's a bunch of stuff in our world making people fatter. Considering those doesn't mean you shouldn't still yell at fatty.

Well, in this particular case:
I guess it's a good thing food isn't heroin then?
I guess if you have an addictive personality and can't control yourself, anything could be bad. Good to know.
it's that yes, we should probably treat food addiction a bit more like drug addiction. As we've said many times, the solution is simple, not easy. Saying "eat less, move more" is true, but just saying it doesn't make it happen. It's a psychological issue, not a physics issue. If you look at a problem and have to reduce it to "most people have no self control", how is that any more helpful? (even if true)

But it seems like you're asking us (the non-fat people) to do something differently, if so, what?

It's the fat people that need to treat it more like drug addiction, I can't force adults to do anything. They have to want to do it themselves.

Again.... what are you asking us to do?

Sorry, I'll try to write up a proposal with concrete action steps for review in our next committee meeting. Until then, feel free to continue reducing all problems to "shitty people being shitty".

I'm just confused what your point is? No need to take it personal man.

If you just want us to be more aware that it is difficult for fat people to stop eating, and it's an addiction, thats fine, I agree. I don't understand what you want.

Sorry that hurts your feelings man, it's not the intent.

what is this tracking exactly?
basal+cardio?

and is basal just doing age/weight/height for a basic BMI average for basal energy consumption, or are you actively tracking lean muscle mass and imputing it manually?
(skin fold measure, cloth tape measure, hydrostatic displacement, etc....)

Smugly reply, "just track it", when I had previously just explained how tracking it is actually nearly impossible.. at BEST the app is just guessing or averaging how much it expects you to shit out. and probably not doing that at all. that is almost certainly just expenditure through activity. not refuse.
and the refuse thing is not to be ignored. thats where thyroid problems come in, or "good/bad" calories. you ever shit out corn? that is calories your body could not process. your body can absorb fat and sugar easily, but many proteins it can not. theres tons of stuff you can eat, and it just goes right through you, as your body can't break it down easily. not all calories are made equal.

and as noted, the app almost certainly is not actually tracking muscle gain, to give an accurate assessment of cals burned building muscle, or cals burned from maintaining muscle.

even if you update your weight daily in the app, it likely is then using an average of 69% lean muscle mass, to calculate basal cal burn. (are you even doing daily weight inputs?) but in reality that could be 60-90% depending how fit you actually are. and you know.. hydration... and this is also counter intuitive, as noted. lets say you weigh 200lbs. you lift weights, and get down to 180lbs. the calc will keep you at 69% lean mass, and lower your basal expenditure, due to lower weight, but in reality, you actually gained muscle, so have a higher basal expenditure, if the calc is going off of height, weight exclusively.

so, tell me, "just track it" what exactly are you inputing and what exactly is it tracking?

I think the only way to accurately get your BMR is one of those oxygen-use tests? Where they have you rest wearing a hood and it calculates how much oxygen/co2 you're using/producing in a controlled environment.

The only other way is to strictly track every gram of food you eat, measure those calories, and then track and see if your weight goes up or down on those calories, and then adjusting, but that relies on accurate food tracking (and accurately tracking your activity calories as well) making it a guess at best.

If you track how much you eat.

And track your weight every day.

You can determine your expenditure.

I don't know why you think this is complicated. It's not.

Yes - maybe on a micro scale, if you're planning on trying to figure out exactly what's in your gut and how much water you're retaining at a given moment, yeah, that's probably fuckin difficult.

But it's not over months.

I agree you can do this but the accuracy depends on your accuracy in tracking, and most people suck at that. If you do a good job this should be "close."
