So don’t shoot me but I missed Bioshock. The original. And the subsequent sequels. Having hard time getting time on ps5 to play the Batman Lego game, so reverted back to PC. About 3 hours into Bioshock one. I regret never touching this. MMO period.

Bioshock 1 - Probably the greatest game of the PS3 era. Story, atmosphere, gameplay. Absurd how good it is. Upgrade the pistol last, the upgrade stations are few and far between and there are just enough to go around. Shotgun was the best thing to upgrade early IMO.

Bioshock 2 - Actually an underrated sequel. Wasn't as good as the first and got boo-booed a lot. Has the best gameplay of the three, with more options and variety than the first even as it loses ground in other areas.

Bioshock 3 - A bit overrated, does great on story and atmosphere while suffering on gameplay. It's a half step above a single-player COD in that regard, restricting you to two weapons at a time and turning your attack spells into glorified grenade types.

In short, 3 has good story/atmosphere, 2 has good gameplay, 1 has both. I'd play all 3, no doubt. They're doing a fourth but it'll probably let everybody down.

I really enjoyed Blasphemous and happily grabbed Blasphemous 2 when it came out, but I couldn't even finish it. I'm not sure why, I just got really bored about halfway through and couldn't be bothered. I might go back to it someday, but I think the general consensus is that it wasn't quite as engaging as the first game.

I've got so many Metroidvanias I wanted to check out and never got to. Blasphemous 1+2 are two of the big ones. Also Ori 1+2, Hollow Knight 1+2. Didn't know where to start, they all kinda felt too similar. Can definitely see burnout settling in fast if I actually went through a bunch of them. I was going to try to do Ender Lilies 1+2 this past month (basically rolled a die) and couldn't even get going with that, got maybe an hour in.

Out of those, I'd definitely recommend the 2 Ori games first. On a technical point, Hollow Knight is probably the best one but the Ori games are just so beautiful, it's hard not to recommend them to everyone. Blasphemous (1 for sure, maybe 2), and Hollow Knight (1 for sure, didn't play 2 yet) I'd all recommend, but for sure you have to space them out. Playing Metroidvanias in a row is a bit like playing open world sandbox games in a row, you're just not going to enjoy the follow-ups due to fatigue from the first.

Check out this unique metroidvania. Cool, weird setting. Combat is totally different than any other metroidvania I’ve seen. It’s turn based and combo/reaction oriented.

Starcom: Nexus. Beat this a few days ago. Great adventure with a good story and crazy twists. Decent 2-d top-down space combat.

Playing the sequel as I write this. I doubt that it's going to be a better story than Nexus, but we'll see. It's got a murderous technophobe cult and a certain alien race just pissed me the fuck off with some Pearl Harbor type bullshit and now i'm in a genocidal mood. So it's off to a good start,

Started playing Bioshock after you reminded me. I haven't touched it since 2008 or something.

This is a damn good game. Really puts into perspective how much slop there is out there and how shitty game dev is these days. Endless early access slop, microtransactions, and things just being shitty with wokeness as well as shitty with poor engineering like Avowed.

I’m only about 4 hours in - we are out of town on vacation this week - but it always feels like a “less is more” situation when I finally pick up an older classic. It has atmosphere, tight controls, minimal UI, no laundry list of bullshit to unlock, etc. It’s telling a robust story and presenting easy to understand but difficult to master gameplay. Figuring out how to use plasmids to make situations easier, etc. You sure as fuck can’t tell exactly the politics of Ken Levine right off the bat - though it clearly has an undertone that reminds me of the sarcasm in robocop around corporatism.

I’m a sucker for unlocking suits in the Spider-man games, but then you have shit like the Spiderbots - collectible slop. Not every game has to be extended by 6 hours of collecting bullshit. RDR1 was another classic I recently played. It was open world but it felt way more alive than most open world slop today. It didn’t feel the need to have every fucking thing crammed into it with bunny ears cowboy hats and shit.

This game has been in early access for 7+ years. I played for the first ime yesterday and had a blast. I guess they just dropped a balance patch that is bringing the boys to the yard. This game is just fun.

I am also just about done with BIOGUN. I have no idea why this game wasn't more hyped/celebrated, it is in my top 5 metroidvanias of all time.

It had potential, but it has some game breaking bugs. I know the one boss fight with the charged laser guy you had to jump through the maze bugged the fuck out on me multiple times. He had infinite health once, and another time I got pushed through the gate and was able to leave the arena. lol

Definitely a cool game, though.

I had zero technical issues. The game has been out for 1.5 years and it appears the devs have corrected any bugs, I cannot say the same for Cookie Cutter which has been out for 2.5 and I quit on the final boss due to a warp bug.

My biggest and only real complaint was the lack of ingame button remapping, having to use the Steam Config is pasable, but when the game shows you original icons it gets a little annoying.
