Just quoting your post because you pointed out the butt rock connection, so people know wtf I'm talking about.I like how the speaker/author has a portrait in the back. It looks like he's posing for a metal band cover.

"I write NOTHING BUT HARD ROCK!" vibes.
Which, if yall dont know, that's where the term "butt-rock" comes from. In the 2000's radio stations when they said, "All rock and nothing but rock."
For a change of pace I started reading this guy's book. Before I start, I have no fucking clue what a "heavy metal fantasy" book is, but it sounded like something I'd be into. After reading about 20%, I'm still not sure what it means, nor do I think this book is whatever that is. Google says it combines heavy metal lyrics and imagery, but I must have missed those. Except for the lyrics thing, kind of sounds like any fantasy shit from the 80s and 90s.

A massive army on the brink of conquest looms large in …
Anyway, this is clearly trying to be an epic fantasy with vast political plots and schemes to go with whatever else is happening (I have no idea yet), so the potential is there I suppose. But I've complained about authors that over-describe shit countless times over the iterations of this board, and this guy has it in spades. Someone looks out over a city, and you get ONE fucking paragraph that takes up multiple pages telling you how over there is Building A, over there is B, over there... Building Z, and oh look at all the races wandering around the market, buying this product and that product and another product, and children laughing and playing, and the guards tromping around, and blah blah blah. Mention maybe one or two of those things at most, if they are significant landmarks that will be mentioned throughout the story. If I don't need to know about Building H right now, why fucking mention it? Do I give two fucks what people are buying in the market unless it directly affects the story? Jesus fucking Christ.
It wouldn't be too bad if it only happened a few times, but in the small segment I've already read, it happens almost constantly. Even worse, something of fairly significant substance will be happening (ok, not really, because next to fucking nothing has happened so far, but more than just an info dump) and then a character will lapse into reminiscing about how their fair town used to be known for this trade or fought in this war or whatever the fuck?? If a chick is sneaking through hidden passages in the castle, is she really thinking about that kind of crap? Even if she is, why the fuck do I need to know about it?
It is very clear this guy has built an immensely detailed world. I'm sure he's got notes longer than this book describing all this shit. Fucking great. Use it as a reference and interject it as necessary. Don't just randomly decide to dump a couple pages of it on me at a time because you're so excited that you probably drew a scale version of the town and placed every fucking building in it and named them all and filled them with people and gave them all backstories. Do they matter to the reader? If not, leave them out! I used to complain about authors that describe every room the characters walk into down to the fucking doilies on the table; he doesn't do that so much, but it is basically the same thing, just on a more meta scale.
I'm honestly torn. There is clearly something here, and he feels it is necessary to fill in the world for whatever story he wants to tell. But since MAYBE one thing of note has happened so far, I can't be sure that he'll ever stop info dumping, or that anything significant will really happen. I mean, it must, right? I'm just not sure I want to slog through all the unnecessary bullshit to find out. On top of that, I currently feel absolutely no connection to any of the characters. I feel that I should by this point, but it is another one of those multi-pov stories that annoy me because we aren't getting enough time with anyone, and the time we are getting isn't making me sympathetic to them at all. I don't hate them or anything (yet), but why do I care what they are doing?
Whew! Thanks for reading my livejournal rant.
