Started Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park last night. I haven't seen the movie since 2013 during a theatrical re-release, so it's been enough time to forget a lot of the plot.

I'm about 5 chapters in so far, and really impressed. It's my first Crichton novel. Some fun facts I learned about him: He was 6'9" and a Harvard Medical School graduate. You can tell bc he talks a LOT about medical details in this book. I'm surprised at the technical detail, info dumping, and lack of a central main character. I dig that stuff, but that's usually a turn off for popular authors.

When he was alive I read all his novels, even the fringe ones (one about cannibals , IIRK) . Read the one about the male work rape (was turned into a movie) in one day. He was really good. I sometimes re-read them.

Eaters of the Dead. Great book.

I've read that Calibre strips DMR automatically from any epub, so that's probably what does permits it to run on your kindle white.

I appreciate it, fellas. I am leaning towards the Kobo Clara BW. Now waiting to see if it goes on sale. $140 isn't a bad price, either, but if it went on sale in a month for $99, I could wait, etc. I need to find a way to track sales history. I'm sure there's some plug-in that does that.

Likewise, if any of yall who are into scifi want to ever read my first novel, I'd be happy to send you the epub (for free). Currently sitting at 4.8/5 stars (54 reviews) on the Amazons. I'm just happy people are reading my work tbh.
You can track Amazon history prices here. Just search for the item from Amazon on it.

It looks like $140 is fine and it’s not likely to go on sale any time soon. It hasn’t gone below $140 in over a year.

Well If I had not read the book so I had some background on what I was looking at, I would think that movie was crap. But since I did, I thought it was great. It is amazing that the movie got made at all though.

You didn't tear up a little bit at this part?

I hadn't read the book before watching it the first time, and I still absolutely loved it. This is one of my top 5 movies or so to rewatch when I need a good movie. So many good characters and scenes. Hell, even the part where he is learning their language was 1000 times better than any other depiction of that I've ever seen.

And who doesn't get a little misty-eyed at this?

“Lo, there do I see my father.

Lo, there do I see my mother,

and my sisters, and my brothers.

Lo, there do I see the line of my people,

Back to the beginning!

Lo, they do call to me.

They bid me take my place among them,

In the halls of Valhalla!

Where the brave may live forever!”

As I mentioned earlier, I started reading Jurassic Park for the first time this week. I'm about 1/2 through it (at the Tyrannosaur vs Toyota Electric Land-rover scene in the rain).

Last time I saw the movie was 2013 in the theatrical re-release. Before that was in 2007. Before that was probably the 90s as a child, so I dont remember much of the basic plot but I do remember a few core moments and catch phrases: Life uh finds a way. Clever girl. Hold onto your butts. Etc.

However, I was not prepared for how good this book is. This is my first Michael Crichton book. The immense amount of technical detail he goes into is very impressive and just highlights how intelligent this giant was.

Crichton was 6'9" and graduated from Harvard Medical School. He wrote his first book while doing a residency (I think?) at the ER and that's also where he got the ideas for his script for the tv show ER. I was surprised to find out he wrote that script. I was watching it with my mother this year and saw his name show up in the opening credits to my bewilderment.

Dr Hammond is pretty much an evil billionaire so focused on creating a high-ticket zoo that he is cutting corners left and right, to the detriment of Nedry. I knew the basic plotpoints, but the amount of detail it goes into how much he fucked over Nedry (Newman) was immense.

The technical details. The amount of physiological, archaeological, avian-connections, medical research, etc. There are 50 pages before we're even introduced to Alan Grant and Ian Malcolm.

I'm only about 1/2 through the story so far. I will say one of the drawbacks of why I had never read it was the type-face. On all the printed editions I saw, the font is incredibly small and there is like 0.5 spacing rather than 1.0 or 1.5 spacing between lines. Which is a strain on my eyeballs. I really need to get an e-reader to avoid this issue in the future.

I dont like reading books of stories I already know, but enough time has passed that I forgot a lot of the details, and to be fair, I had no idea how much more intense and in depth the book is compared to the movie: complex corporate espionage, corrupt billionaires, legal system audits, physiological analyzation of the animals and the immense amount of detail gone into keeping the animals from breaking out and going to the main land, etc. Its really well thought out.

Fun fact: The movie was greenlit in early 1990 before the book was released in Oct 1990.

I might try Andromeda Strain next.

Andromeda Strain was good as well. TBH I do not recall a bad MC book. I do recommend an e-reader , they let you change/increase/space the fonts.

Change of subject but have you perchance read the greatness that is the Malazan Book of the Fallen?

Currently about to wrap up Jurassic Park (1990) and I’m a few chapters into State of Fear (2004).

The difference in quality between these two is enormous. State of Fear reads like bad fan fiction or possibly an authors debut work. I don’t mean the issue of eco terrorism or questions on the severity of climate change disaster, I mean the actual prose in writing is pretty bad. Jurassic Park is a masterpiece and genuinely one of the best books I’ve ever read. State of Fear is likely going to be DNFd after tonight.

I definitely want to try his andromeda strain and the lost world next.

I'm not sure I ever read State of Fear, but just about everything I've ever read by Crichton has been at least good. I remember there is one titled Airframe about investigating an airplane crash, and while I have a degree in aeronautical engineering, I was still blown away by how accessible he made shit like how a wing works, airfoils, etc. And how correct he was as well. Which says something when the guy definitely doesn't have a degree in this shit. Every book I read by him (which hasn't been for a long time, which I should fix immediately) teaches me something new, in a way that I almost don't even feel like I'm learning it. If nothing else, in my mind that makes his books worth reading.

Have you read any OG Tom Clancy? Because that exactly explains my experience reading Tom Clancy books (his 1984-1999 books, after his divorce his quality of work nosedived as ghost writers took over). Apparently Clancy was so accurate he was investigated by the CIA for writing about things formerly thought to be classified (he pieced together the information by reading books in the library), and even was investigated as a potential spook for the KGB.

I read all of the first 7 or so Clancy books as they were released. Absolutely loved them, and you're right, that's where I learned a ton about military equipment and tactics. Red Storm Rising was fucking amazing for when it came out (right around the time the Berlin Wall came down), haven't had a chance to reread it since, and I'm a little wary of doing so in case it isn't as great as I remember.

Im about 1/2 through Red Storm Rising currently for the first time. It's very good. The first chapter is my favorite opening chapter in any Tom Clancy book I've read (Ive read all the OG Jack Ryan/John Clark books except Debt of Honor and Exec Orders). I will say that per Tom Clancy tradition, it has a LOT of slow-burn build up after the opening chapter. Not much happens for the next 100 pages besides dialogue/setup.

First book is pretty rough, not gonna lie. Second book is fucking amazing, particularly the ending.
