Anyone here up to date on Tesla lore? I test drove a Model 3 today and one thing that kept bugging me is how it shows the other traffic around you on the screen, basically means stuff is constantly moving on the screen and drawing your eyes to it because of it. Is it possible to turn this off? I couldn't figure out how during the test drive.

I do agree that I'd prefer the basic info (speed, etc) to be centered, but you get used to it after a few hours. What bugs me more is that there's a single cabin temperature set point and if it's cool outside it's like an 11-step process to get fresh air to the interior without triggering the heater. There really needs to be floor and ceiling settings (heat to 65, cool to 75, else vent).

Eh, the visualization is cool and fun to have- but its not really info your going to be able to use as the human operator.

The turn signal cameras, that really is much better on the traditional dash location..3rd if it took them a bit to move it there lol

Just stick a small screen there, it cant cost that much, toss in a hud also, will be stuper groovy

I'd still rather have the turn signal cam at it's current location than not at all. When we get around to replacing our 2014 4Runner, it's definitely a feature I want.

I bought a higher trim audi last year (4 door coupe, 350HP). Disappointed with how many issues it's had within just 15k miles.

Every time when starting the car, have to turn off automatic start/stop
Every time when starting the car, have to turn off audi presense because sometimes it senses an accident that isn't about to happen and stops the car at higher speeds
Rattling noise from dashboard
Tapping noise from sunroof
Chain noise when accelerating
20% lower gas mileage than when new
Carplay frequently disconnects
Trunk sometimes didn't open all the way
Acceleration started to feel less explosive
Seats are pretty uncomfortable because the side bolsters dig into the thighs
Little noises when going over rough roads, really annoying

Of course it's all fixable under warranty which is up to 40k miles/4 years, but I recently drove a Lexus and was reminded of how much simpler the drive is.. quiet exhaust, isolated from the road, don't have to turn functions off before each drive. Could get a solid Lexus sedan for probably $20-25k.

Granted the car was incredibly fun to drive, and looked truly unique on the road. Beautiful piece of engineering. I feel bad when thinking about selling it.

Only other car that interested me was a BMW 6 series.. I like those sleek looking cars

The deeply buried ventilation controls is one of the things that has caught the eye of Sauron in Europe. The 2026 safety requirements will dock points if it takes more than 2 steps on a screen and for a bunch of controls (blinkers/wipers/high beam) an actual physical switch or control stalk is required. It also establishes required locations for many controls (like the gear shift has to be on the column or center console, it can't be on the ceiling). The blinker buttons on the steering wheel are also going away because of this.

I don't know if the US has followed suit but it's likely that these things will make it into US market vehicles too.

It sucks we have to get to the point where the government has to step in to stop asshole styling departments and Musk from being idiots. I'm all for innovation, but all this stuff they've been doing is objectively substantially worse.

HVAC controls peaked with the 3 dials. Anything beyond that has been inferior.

that's what I love the most about my car, everything is navigatable via touch screen but certain features also have hard coded physical buttons. Volume/Power, HVAC, Defrost, and Cameras are all real buttons.

Yeah it's one of the things I like about the BMW i3 I currently drive. It's fully electric for all the benefits that gives but everything is controlled via actual buttons. The screen doesn't even have touch functionality.

Tesla's offering €5k on top of a trade-in here currently which was enticing enough to get me in the door but I think I'm going to give it a pass for now. i3 isn't exactly pretty but it feels like it was built to last a century.

The first few years they were iffy with the extender and general suck battery, but that seems all resolved.

The interior is imo nicer than “current” BMW interior language. It’s hit a good balance of “classic old” and “minimalist new” but not yet gotten to neon led dance dance party crap

Their looks are really not that harsh now days, it does not stand out (negatively) as it did when first released.

If you think the Audi is annoying to own and the noises/rattles/issues are bad, don't get the Beemer.

I never even look at it anymore, just the speed if needed. It's one of those things you get used to after a couple hours and it's not a big deal.

Maybe I'm weird but I set the ventilation controls once like 5 years ago and basically never touch them. I just move the temp (which is just one touch) up or down a couple degrees if needed. Not really sure what you'd even need to change in there, it's automatic climate control.

I spent an hour in the BMW showroom while getting my car serviced last week and there's not many cars in there that I could see myself driving. Maybe i4 or i5 (although I really don't care for the front end). They all have the exact same interior too and the screens look like a 12 year old's idea of futuristic.

The center screen has a zillion icons and you need to scroll up or down to even see them all. Who thought that was a good idea for a car.

It's not the worst offender in the list (blinkers/wipers are more critical) but if you live in a cold area where your windows fog up and people have to dig through a screen while driving to get the demister working it's not ideal.

Modern climate control really should take care by itself but people are dumb. I see people turn the temp down to 65 when they get in a hot car and then turn it back up to 78 when it gets too cold. They either don't understand how it works or they think it'll cool down quicker.

Wipers are on the turn signal stalk or on the steering wheel button if you got the stalk-less version. You press it to activate them and then can select mode with the scroll wheel on the wheel, never taking hands off wheel. I keep my wipers off auto because the auto-wipers are kinda retarded (thanks Elon for not buying the $2 rain sensor every other manufacturer uses) so I trigger that all the time.

I think you mean the defroster, right? When you say demister?

Just FYI you can move those icons to the quick bar and never have to open those menus if you want to.

Not everything is easy in a Tesla and there are some workarounds needed, but most of the problems people bring up are pretty trivial to workaround and they just refuse. 🤷

Demister is to clear condensation on the inside of the windshield yeah. This may be some British English term I picked up somewhere along the way.

Wasn't aware you could set up a quick bar, that's good to know at least. I did see that they're going to offer a retrofit for the blinker stalk, the blinker buttons were ok on the highway but got kind of annoying on roundabouts which are common here.

Full self drive was active on the car but is still not legal here so it didn't work. The smart cruise control where you can signal for an automatic lane change worked well enough.

The large wide screen thing is... not my fave - and a few pull it off well... it takes a revision or so for them to make all the interior blend together properly - rather than "it just looks like the put a X (popular new thing) in their Y (old design). Like the Hyundai's with the wide front and middle screen style, their first take was ehh, but now it is one of the better looking ones.

I've driven a car from just about every OEM and have never had the automatic climate control work well enough to set and leave alone. I'll admit I'm a bit picky though.

The big one that usually knocks it out of auto is changing vents - most companies have the AC set to the upper vents and I can't stand having the air consistently blowing on me, so, I usually like to just set it to the lower footwell vents once the cabin is cooled off. In winter, defrosting is a pretty consistent one too. I also typically like to have it set to outside air rather than recirculation, so, it's handy to be able to quickly switch to recirculation when suddenly driving behind a diesel (some vehicles do this automatically now).

Not a fan of touchscreen controls since I typically prefer to use Android Auto if available and Google's spec basically means they own the screen when active, so, you have to back out to change anything. Plus a good physical dial/button doesn't require any change of focus. Some OEMs have gotten better with their implementation but everything is still inferior to the past, so, I don't see the point.

Amen, I put my vents on both, so the air is more “evenly” cold all around and not just blasting on your face and my wife cries and cries about her feet… so annoying.
