Went to pick up the kiddos from relatives a few states away and go to a New Years party. 300 miles from home, after supercharging, every alarm known to man shows up on my nav screen. Voltage, air suspension, basically the main battery shit the bed and left me stranded, with a car that wasn't quite 5 years old. It would only go in Park or Neutral.

Apparently, they used Panasonic for batteries in 2020-2021, and it wasn't quite up to specs; very rare I'm told! My life is full of very rare critical fails that are not my fault(well maybe this one is, I did pick the car lol)

Tesla was at least quick to send a flat bed out and drive me to the dealership 90 minutes the other direction. At least it's under warranty, and I know there's a super low chance of that happening, but fuck me if this hasn't shaken my faith in EVs a bit.

The good news is I'm getting a newer better battery, so no more range loss from the last 5 years of ownership. Silver lining!

Is it a DSOM Firehawk? Since that is the best vehicle color ever produced, I might have to go with it, but I'm also a bit biased toward F-Bodies, as I have owned a few in the past as well. It's now a classic car with classic car prices so I guess the $28k shouldn't be surprising. While I haven't been in the market for a while now, I would guess that there should be plenty of aftermarket replacement parts still produced for it.

Driving a classic car is a bit of a lifestyle choice, where you are sacrificing comfort and putting in extra effort to drive a more unique vehicle that you love. It also hurts more when some fucknut runs into it, which is much more likely in the big cities.

I don't know how I feel about the KIAs. I guess they are an acceptable saloon car but they don't do anything for me. While the K5 looks slightly better, it certainly isn't worth paying anything to upgrade to it from what you already have (just based on looks).
Not sure what DSOM is and a quick google didn't help me, but probably not if it's a color, this one is silver.

The k5s look very similar to the fortes so no real change there, but it's not a look that I dislike. Just don't like it as much as f-bodies looks wise.

I'm kind of torn at the moment...

Found a 2002 Firehawk that appears to be in good shape at a decent price. The 98-02 trans am's are my favorite car, they just look so good. 2026 k5 gt also looks pretty good, though, and it has all the fancy modern stuff like remote start/heated seats/can connect my phone for pandora and spotify/etc. and also would probably handle Ohio winters a bit better, but it's just about 40k vs 28k for the Firehawk I'm looking at. And on the 3rd side of the coin, my 2022 forte gt-line is still in pretty good shape (only 19k miles since most of the time I've had it I lived super close to work, now it's like 300-400 miles a week tho) and I only owe like $10.5k on it.

The smart choice would probably be to just stick with my current car but I dunno...
These things were giant pieces of shit. This is a terrible idea. You should get it.

Ah, yeah. After looking around for when the color was introduced, it looks like the Firehawk didn't come in DSOM.

DSOM is Daytona Sunset Orange Metallic, which was introduced in 2001. They ran a bunch of ads with a DSOM Trans Am that year. Dodge also made a similar color and put it on the iconic 2005 Viper Copperhead Edition.

Oh ya, that's a nice color. I have seen a couple of Trans Ams with that color pop up from time to time on autotrader/etc.

I used to hate the yellow and black 2002 anniversary thing they did too, when I was younger, but now I actually like it.

No shade here but I thought this would be right up your alley with some of the cars you've been showing.

Owning cars and wanting to spend $1mm plus dues is not even remotely the same. A track weekend at COTA with either Chin or Edge Addicts is $5,000 - $6,000. I like to - and am able to with work - go 5-7 times per year. How does throwing money away make sense?

Doesn't make sense at all but we all have our pet things we blow our money on.

DE weekends are $5000+ now? Are you including all consumables/parts in that amortized or something? I know the COTA ones used to be more expensive but $5000 seems crazy.

There’s a lot of people with high end cars that don’t have $1m + $50k annual dues of money laying around. I’ve met a few people with high end cars and they’re just above average earners that are really into cars. Not billionaires with a pole barn full of them.

Totally true, but they are going for that market. Time will tell if they have a market at those prices, probably not, but they may gradually lower prices and try to capture people who will pay at each level, who knows.

Registration plus garage space is about $1,600 for the weekend. Track insurance for the car is $1,800 - $2,500 depending on which I use. Hotel and dinner is usually $700 - $1,000 for Friday and Saturday nights. Fuel is maybe $150 - $200 for the weekend. I don't count tires, brakes, alignment changes or other maintenance. That's just part of owning a car.

To go from $25,000 - $30,000 per year in hobby spend to dropping a million bucks plus double the annual is ratarded.

They claim to want 250 members at the listed prices. But, they are going after people who don't track there in the first place, so why would someone now suddenly want to at that exorbitant price just because there will be food and more open days?

Ah you do track insurance, I never did. My cars were significantly cheaper than yours that I tracked though, too, so there's that.

It is a retarded spend, no question, but there's people paying that for golf country clubs. COTA thinks they have that market out there. I doubt it, but I guess we'll see.

Were you around when MSR was trying to be primarily a country-club track also? There were people who were members who basically thought it was nuts to come out for a track weekend when it's crowded, they wanted to drive basically alone. MSR was a shit ton cheaper than this of course, but the idea holds. It's not the same people coming to drive in the red group with DE that would buy this membership.

Very true about golf country clubs. Maybe my perspective is skewed.

I didn't visit MSR until maybe 2021 and by then it was (and still is) beat to shit and no one I know wants to run there. Word is some private equity money wants to fix it up, so we'll see. Yes, there can be appeal to running on a track that's mostly empty. I'd prefer that too. But, the cost differential is wild.

I think the last time I was out at Cresson was maybe, 2016. It wasn't bad then, the transition from the 1.3 to the 1.8 was a little balls but nothing you couldn't plan for. I guess they've let it go since then?

It would take another 45min or so to get to it from the Austin area, but Eagle Canyon could be an option too. They started renovations on it in 2017. Taking 35W through Ft. Worth isn't that bad either.

If you have a group of people interested in keeping multiple cars in the area, you could even look at renting a hanger at one of the various small fields (or a larger more secure field). You can usually find some pretty good sized storage units around the various lakes as well, if you don't want to pay the $300/month at the track.
