Just got a new form of robot scam call. I answer the phone and it starts hacking up a lung, then says, sorry about that, allergies. I mean it was disgusting sounding. Snorting and hacking and blowing.

I was like cool. I don't talk to clankers, say hot dog to prove you're a real person.

dial tone.

I don't even understand what their game is.

I get packages delivered all around my house. If they don't take a picture, it's an easter egg hunt every time I get something. Most of the time packages get delivered to the front door or to a box we setup under the carport specifically for packages. Once in a while people put them inside the box and it always takes us days to remember to check there. Those spots are all covered, but sometimes they also put them just outside the carport, or on the steps to the deck outside of the carport. My favorite so far has been behind the rear tire of a car that wasn't under the carport. Just maximum "Fuck You" with that placement. That package had been run over and then reboxed and I'm thinking they put it there so we'd think we did it. When I opened it I could still clearly see tread marks on the inside package.

Mostly they get put in a place safe from the rain though. Recently I had a few packages in a row being put outside the carport and I realized that they only do that shit when it's raining. There just happened to be some severe flooding in the area over a few days and suddenly they couldn't be assed to get anything under cover? Fucking assholes. This is why I don't hesitate to order 50 lbs of lead ingots and have them delivered.

I'm still getting a lot that seem to be calling just to see if someone answers. I answer, say hello, and silence, then hang up. Only thing I can think is someone was expecting someone to answer in a foreign language, or clankers mapping out which phone numbers have humans attached for later.

I'm sure some of it tracking/logging somehow, but I think their automation is just buggy sometimes too. I just don't answer the phone any more. If it's not important enough for someone to leave a message, it wasn't important enough to interrupt my day.

My usual stance is if it doesn't come across with a caller ID I recognize as a person I want to talk to, then I don't answer. Lately that has been loosened a little as I am starting to do some "job market exploration" and other things.....

back in my small hometown, see a man and woman walking down the street. instantly recognized him, we went to same high school, he was 2-3 years older than me, but was held back several times. after i had graduated and moved on, he was arrested and jailed for raping an elderly woman. thought something would have ended his shitty existence by now.

FedEx telling me a 5 pound tube of cardboard (with a car part inside) is $174. Nothing rushed, nothing other than basic shipping. What the hell?

Dimensional weight if it’s strangely sized. Essentially at certain tiers of package size, it’ll rate as what they expect something that size will weigh regardless of actual weight. Not sure if this has been updated recently.

One of the reasons I've started answering in italian.

"Bobbita Boopi"

But most of the time I answer and hang up so they don't leave a fucking 4 second empty voicemail that AT&T can't just delete automatically for some reason.

Yup, they'll go off of dim weight or actual weight, whichever costs more. Literally every carrier uses this method for shipping costs.

As others already called out, likely dim weight but also, are you shipping it, or is it being shipped to you?

Common thing I saw at UPS, and I'm sure FedEx does something similar, was people entering package details and marking the "large package" option when it wasn't necessary. That automatically adjusted the minimum billable weight to 90 lbs and added a hefty surcharge. The system rarely caught this in automated audits to remove it automatically. What was even more fun, is even if the audit did catch it, it would adjust the dim weight down to the proper amount, but wouldn't remove the surcharge from the bill. Had to request to get it credited after.

I'm shipping it out. So far all I've done is the online estimates so the buyer knew what the charge would be. I haven't brought it in to a store yet. I didn't check a box for large, all it did was ask for dimensions (48 inches tall by 4 by 4 and 6 pounds).

I'm sure they make a good chunk of revenue on that surcharge.

Meanwhile FedEx would charge a company about half that. Even a nobody small business.

Their model is they rape individual customers and charge the normal rates only to businesses. Its a uniquely fucked up business model. But why do you hate capitalism if you object, I'll be told.

Prices have definitely gone up. That sucks. I kinda miss having access to the tools just to sate curiosity about what the breakdown of charges are.

Amazon moving to doing almost everything in house probably fucked up their income a lot too. They had an absurd discount with UPS at least when I last looked before I left back in 2017, which was, something like 90%, because they shipped a massive, nearly guaranteed volume for so long. Their weekly invoices were still $500k-1 mil per account, and they had about 50. Trying to view one of them basically crashed the dated office PC, or at least froze it up for about 5 minutes while it loaded.
