There's this guy, does work for me. He's a tiler. Not just any tiler, he is a bloody artist. He is so damned good at his job. He's on call for me, meaning when I need him he stops other jobs to do mine. He gets things done quickly and exactly to specs. His work is impeccable and he doesn't overcharge at all.
I've never liked this guy. He's rude, impatient, pushy, and egotistical. I've always known this about him. I figured whatever, he is generally in and out of a job in 3 days, 4 max.
Today I was on the jobsite. One of the houses I'm flipping. It's a big flip. Going from 1.5 bathrooms to 3.5, and the .5 is relocated. New kitchen, new floor plan, new windows, new everything. The owner wanted lots of tiles, this guy is doing them. I'm talking about 2,600 square feet of tile. He'll get it done on time and under budget. I could have done them myself with my own crew, but this guy is so damned fast he'd probably beat us by 2 or 3 days at least. The jobsite is a hive of activity right now. The tiler guy is there, painters, electricians are finishing off, plumbers are setting fixtures, probably a dozen people in the house working. It's close quarters, and if you've ever been in that situation, you know how frustrating it cdsan be. This tile dude is running the site like 1. he's in charge, 2. everyone must do his bidding, 3. he hates every person in the world. First off, he's not in charge. Not even close. He's told to work around the other trades, and do the tiles as the space becomes available. Not as efficient for him, better for the whole process. He's constantly telling people to get the fuck out of his work area, to stop being so fucking retarded, to ask him politely, blah blah blah, you get the idea. I have a few women working on the site, and he is just terrible to them. Keeps telling them to get him a drink, or some lunch, asking to see their tits, telling them how he'd fuck them raw, blah blah blah, you get the idea.
He was doing all this while I was there today. I told him to knock it off. He told me to fuck off. I told him if he spoke again to anyone like that he'd stop getting work from me. He told me to fuck off. He said he knew how good he was and I would never cut him off. I told him to fuck off. I halted everyone's work in the house, we all picked up all his crap, tools, cutter, saw, etc. etc., and put it next to his van. He stood in the middle of it all red-faced and spitting mad. He told me I'd never get another tiler as good as him, and he'd talk to everyone he knew to make sure none of the local tilers would never work with me. I laughed in his face and told him to get the fuck oub. Fuck the fucking fucker.
So now I've got a lot of shit-tonne of tiling to do, and this crazy bastard running around saying who knows what.
So I'm rustled on a number of levels. 1. I submitted my work crews to this guy for over a year without realizing how terrible it was. 2. I lost a really good tiler who is enough of a shit-human that his talent doesn't justify putting up with him. 3. A guy who worked for me, at my direction and pleasure, told me to fuck off. It took a lot of self control to not knock him the fuck out. He's a little guy, too. Just like you'd imagine.
I offered the women support to file harassment charges, the rest of the workers volunteered to witness. They're going to, not in hopes of prosecution, but so this guy has a police file that follows him around. It will, and everyone I know will be aware of it.
Why are people so stupid?
