I think the horizontal content stems from the max level being and announced as remaining at 60 permanently. However, a level 60 with ilvl 250 gear isn't going to play in the same ballpark as a level 60 with ilvl 60 gear. At some point they're going to create new content that requires better items to tackle it realistically. You won't be coming back after years of not playing and suddenly be useful in a post-Naxxramas raid if you stopped around Molten Core. Jimmy Tryhard isn't going to want to invest 50 hours a week into the game (and whale away at the cash shop) if they stay at the same level of power as Joe McWeekends.
I'm actually curious if they are going to do this with zones too. Perhaps they will add more level 60 zones with more dangerous mobs as player power progresses?

It was already that way. You couldn't do Naxx without AQ gear. You couldn't do AQ without BWL gear. All of that was lvl 60 content.

Correct, which is why I said this idealized untouched WoW isn't going to last. You're already seeing it with the $30 cloud elves, cosmetic-only items being added to Forever. They're adding transmogrification to sell you cosmetic items, and soon they'll probably make a Forever version of housing so they can sell you "classic-looking" decor items.

There's a reason Retail became something you despise.
Literally a feature in WoW Forever to turn off TRANSmog shit.

I think this might be stretched. Like later on you can go with Naxx gear to Forever Content Patch 2 and survive. But the items from that content patch have +DMG vs Earth Elementals or something so the gear from there makes you much more effective there than if you have stuff from elsewhere.

Something like that.

I'm not even sure which zones they could add at this point. They already kept Quel'thalas out of the game because 1) it's the focus of the current Retail expansion and 2) it was originally TBC content and they probably wanted to emphasize on the Classic aspect of things.

The way they worded it, they said "we aren't quite ready to go to Quel'thalas yet" so it seems to be in their plans, probably once Midnight is fully over. But it was a big part of the Warcraft 1 to 3 story so it's a bit jarring.

Now this is an alternate timeline where the portal to Outland is never reopened by Lord Kazzak, Northrend is never explored again after Arthas returns and kills King Terenas, the Cataclysm never happens, Pandaria never discovered, etc etc... so where do you go? You can't add the Azuremyst/Bloodmyst isles, you can't have any new landmasses or planets or dimensions.

They've been tinkering with "Heroic World Tier" in Legion Remix and in the next Midnight patch (plus the Val/Naigtal sub-zones in current Midnight), so perhaps they'll add a toggable Heroic difficulty to outdoors content so players at max power with raid gear can go to a place and not steamroll everything.

That's the limits of this concept I guess. They said they want to fill in the blanks on the Classic maps but after they added those two new zones, there's not much left right out the door (except Quel'thalas).

I tend to agree with this statement broadly. However there is a nano spec of hope that wow forever is/could be wow2 and they just gradually upgrade the engine.
Theyve been gradually upgrading the engine since the game launched, so they're already doing this

I wouldnt be shocked if they do a stat squish down the line if content starts scaling too much.

Hoping the addon community gets things coded soon. Some QoL stuff still to come that feels bad not having like we did in SoD and Ascension.

Weekend Warrior is gonna log on some time in 2031 after an extended break and find himself at level 15 with Sulfuras equipped.

Yes I remember the last time they put in alternate ways and secondary stats to your character in some kind of system meant to increase your power while you stayed at the same level.

Oh wait that was Path of the Titans and they scrapped it when they realized it was just a min/max'ing headache and didn't contribute anything meaningful to the game.

I know it's hard to believe but I truly wish the best to Forever for those folks excited to play it, but the levels of hopium in this thread are off the chart.

Bunch of beaten wives going back to their abusive husbands because "this time, we'll do it right".

The Retail devs scrapped it because by the time they started down that path, they had conditioned the playerbase to expect 20% power gains each expansion. If they had STARTED down that road, it would be a different expectation.

The amount DOOMER you are tied to is just fucking idiotic.

Oh the fun police are here again.
Fun police? By all means, keep paying for the same regurgitated nostalgia bait that has taken over Hollywood, video games, and pretty much every other entertainment industry.

The funny part is that this forum is absolutely littered with the same people complaining about the state of MMOs, modern games, bad movies, lack of originality, corporate monetization, etc. - all while continuing to throw their money at the exact same recycled products over and over again. Continuously justifying it with, "WHAT ELSE WOULD I POSSIBLY SPEND MY MONEY ON!?! COFFEE?!!? PURCHASE JUSTIFIED!".

At some point, you have to recognize that consumers are part of the reason this stuff keeps getting made. If companies can slap "CLASSIC," "REMASTERED," or "REDUX" on something from 15-20+ years ago and watch everyone line up to buy it again, why would they take the risk of making something genuinely new?

So no, it's not about being the "fun police." Enjoy the game if you want. I'm laughing at the rather obvious irony of people endlessly complaining about the industry's lack of creativity while enthusiastically rewarding it for giving them the same nostalgia product for the fifth time.

Look how POE does itemization. It is 100% possible to not invalidate previous content. Just have to have a modicum of creativity and not just tie everything to a base stat like str/int/agi

Ok, I thought you were just a EQ hater, but it's clear now that you hate EVERYTHING entertainment based and are just a crusty piece of shit that doesn't know how to enjoy anything anymore. You've been a long-time contributor to this site, but it's time for you to go.... on ignore.

Hell they could just make a Eurika from FF14 in this what adds nothing but an awesome look armor set with 0 stat increases and the people go bananas in that shit for months.

Just off scrapped vanilla zones with actual files you got Gillijim's Isle south of STV, Emerald Dream behind the dragon portals, Gilneas, The Dragon isles, Inverted Karazhan, Stormwind Vault dungeon, Grim Batol, actual Ashzara content including its scrapped battleground, Tel Abim, the prototype outland that was a rough Hellfire Peninsula that could be used as a raid, the original plan for Gnomergon, Zul'Dare off the Plaguelands, subterranian Hyjal that shows the Old Gods influence, whatever they want with the Caverns of Time, and the Underdark, which was supposed to span under the EK that was all Nerubian.

Since WoW Forever is being built upon the Retail client, they can absolutely create MASSIVE underground zones/areas. They already did this a couple times in Retail and I see no reason why they wouldn't be able to do the same again in Forever.

Those are good ideas. Subterranean Hyjal is already in one of the new raids though, Barrow Deeps.
