If I'm understanding this right, the game takes place in Shu and has a very similar story to Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, with a mysterious force turning people into monsters. Not to mention an extremely similar name... and it ISN'T a sequel? The hell.

I liked Wo Long a lot (it makes parrying incredibly fun/rewarding). Didn't get too far in Black Myth Wukong, wasn't into it enough to really invest the time needed to git gud. I think I got to the first major boss, the fight in a lake or something to that effect. May have been the end of chapter 1.

If this is good, and a bit easier than Black Myth, I might give it a go, especially if I drop DK Bananza from the schedule.

Struggled with the Commander fight until I switched to 1h long sword (astral blade), dumped points into the 1h tree and used that red spear magic attack on her. Slammed her for 300+ damage a hit and it helped avoid some of her attacks. Beat her on 2nd try with that and had 2 charges from my health flask left.

I want to play more but feel like my patience for navigating tiny walkways with dead ends, ladders, wrapping this way and that is pretty low.

Specifically I was just passed Shu temple, killed the guy at the top relatively easy (one charged R2 with spear staggered him immediately and I could almost chain it), made my way beneath the temple into the cave area, but felt like I missed a lot so teleported back to do the village area outside the other exit.

But that place just tries my patience. May give another weapon a shot. Not loving the spear. Was trying to work on using the L2 counter move but can’t quite work it out.

Getting my ass handed to me. I keep pressing LB to parry/block and end up getting cut in half. Lol

I hate when Soulslikes deviate from the Souls control scheme. Most of them do it with either blocking or dodging and it's obnoxious. If there's a way to reconfigure the buttons, that isn't so bad.

Parry is supposed to be left trigger though, so it's fine. The only difference between this and -souls is that there's only one defense button that changes depending on what weapon you have. So block is LT and "parry" is just what happens when you perfectly time the block.

LB is reserved for the special ability that each weapon has (or the one you've chosen to use from the skill tree instead). Light/heavy attack are RB/RT as expected.

AFAIK you can't remap any controls, that was the other big thing people were bitching about on day 1 because you can't change the keyboard mapping at all and I'm pretty sure there was no option for gamepad controls either. The game really benefits from having a controller with back buttons too. All souls-likes do, but this one especially has a lot of shit going on with the face buttons and d-pad that is really annoying when it makes you take your thumb off the stick.

How does the difficulty rank versus things like Nioh, Sekiro, Black Myth?

Is there a good difficulty curve or does it spike?

For reference, I did fine with Sekiro, but only made it about halfway through Nioh before I put it down. Fast and furious gameplay is much tougher for me to get gud at than slow and steady, and the Niohs move a lot faster than Fromsoft's stuff.

On a soulslike difficulty scale, I'd put it about a 4 (i.e. roughly on par with pre-DLC Nioh 2). Optionally dropping to a 1 if you decide to abuse Ethereal Form (mid-game spell).

It's not a parry game at all, so don't go in expecting anything like Sekiro or Lies of P. It's very different from Wukong (which I personally hated almost as much as I did Sekiro) too. If anything the combat is more like the early Souls games, right down to magic being grossly overpowered.

That's cool, I don't really have it in me to git gud at anything super-difficult. I never found the early Souls games to even be hard at all and always get a laugh out of all the mainstream videos/articles acting like they're the Carolina Reaper of video games. Dark Souls 1 and Demon Souls are both easy as shit with a caster build, or a melee build if you level grind, with the only potential disaster being if you let worlds fall into PBWT (especially world 4) in Demon Souls.

Surprised that Nioh 2 is only a 4. Was under the impression all this time that Nioh 2 was super-hard, like top of the heap for Soulslikes.

Maybe I should give the Niohs another shot. Left off halfway through the first one. Was struggling, but nothing worse than my first time through Dark Souls 2. Not sure if I got the slow spell yet that gimps bosses.

As for Wuchang, I started it and did an hour or so, it's a high-quality game. I suggest plunking down $10 extra for the Deluxe upgrade because it has some pretty sweet outfits.

I did note that they're also basic as a melee build if you overlevel. N00bs can beat the games even easier as a caster if they're desperate, but it isn't like I recommend that for a first run. I did the "Dark Souls at level 1" challenge as a Pyromancer and never had any real issues (as in, nothing took more than two tries). Boss HP is very low in Dark 1.

Never had a huge amount of trouble with either of those games over the multitude of playthroughs (outside of messing up World Tendency), wheras it was an uphill battle to get Bloodborne, Dark Souls 2, and Sekiro down, and I failed to take down Nioh. I'd say those are actually worth the difficulty-hype, especially Souls 2's DLCs.

TLDR yeh casters are gey

I actually found dark souls 1 super easy after revisiting it after playing all souls games. I did a naked run with a giant club and it was 1-2 tries for each boss (except bed of chaos being gay). I think I beat it in like 10h

Finished this up, game as better than expected.

Some fights are total bullshit though, enemies and especially bosses will attack you literally at the moment you get up after getting knocked down, so you have to spam a dodge or eat shit.

I will say I enjoyed the design of the areas you go through in the game. As you progress they get really insane looking and its awesome.

I'm playing it on PS5. Balanced Mode with FPS unlocked is pretty good (the FPS goes WAY up if you take off the lock). However it still chugs in any large areas, so I ended up just turning it to Performance Mode and being done with it (doesn't really matter if it's locked or not, it never really changes either way at that point).

Haven't gotten that far, difficult to really sit down and get into any games anymore. I like this one enough to keep at it though.
