An 88-year-old wounded veteran of World War II died Thursday after he was brutally beaten, apparently at random, in the parking lot of his lodge in Spokane, Wash., authorities said.

Spokane police said they were seeking two suspects in the attack Wednesday night on Delbert "Shorty" Belton, a retired aluminum company worker who'd lived in the city for most of his life after he was discharged from the Army after the war. Belton died of his injuries Thursday morning, police said.

The suspects were described as black males of average build, 16 to 19 years old, wearing black clothing and red sneakers. Police Lt. Mark Griffiths said they apparently attacked Belton at random.

"It appears he was assaulted in the parking lot, and there was no indication that he would have known these people prior to the assault," Griffiths said at a news conference.

Random acts of violence happen every day for seemingly no reason, but it's still stuck in my head all those posts from angry black citizens over the Trayvon trial.

Still blows me away though how you beat an 88 y/o to death. Who cares if he was a Vet, subdue him and take what you want. It doesn't take excessive violence to accomplish whatever you intend to do to most (elderly) citizens. The fall of society. Bah.

in your hand? If some guy just decides to walk up to you and knock you over the head, you're not gonna draw fast enough.

There's very little you can actually do to completely avoid random violence.

In this case the gun wouldn't have helped much. Being attacked out of the blue you just aren't going to have much time to respond unless something tipped you off.

However, if enough people are carrying concealed in an area, it would act as a deterrent to this type of shit.

To be fair, even if he had a gun and saw these junior Obamas coming at him, an 88 yr old man isnt going to exactly be clint eastwood with the trigger. Though if they thought he was packing it would make them think twice about fucking with him.

I can't imagine ever having to shoot two teenagers. Man that'd be tough to pull the trigger unless I'm on the ground already or they're armed.

you don't have to kill them, the vast majority of crimes prevented by guns the gun is never fired, just the threat of force changes the outcome.

Pacific theater was far worse than the Western Front. By the time the Marines/etc got to places like Pellilu, Okinawa, or Iwo Jima, the Japanese were basically in full "fuck you, we're going to make you bleed HARD" mode. It's not coincidence that American causalities began to skyrocket around that point in time.
