Sony hardly has a history of being a consumer friendly company. They were forced into that somewhat after the disastrous ps3, but they are going back to their roots now.

The plug-in MS expandable storage I don’t see as a good thing though. I’d rather crack open the case and be able to put in any storage I want that meets the requirements rather than be forced to purchase a very specific type.

Definitely agree about the storage. It may be more expensive ($230 vs. $220) to buy another 1TB for the PS5 at release, but Samsung doesn't have an exclusive deal with Sony like Seagate does with MS. Not to mention that the Samsung drive is actually the bleeding edge of SSD technology while the drive Seagate made for MS is just a plain old drive that's no faster than any half-decent $120-ish NVMe m.2 drive off Amazon. Hell, it's not even particularly "fast" for a PCIe 3.0 drive, let alone 4.0. The only thing notable about it is that it's apparently 2242 form factor rather than 2280. It feels like MS is pulling the same sort of shit Sony did with the Vita with this ridiculously overpriced proprietary storage design. Hopefully they haven't done anything special to lock out other companies from making unlicensed versions of the cart.

That explains microsoft stepping up, but not Sony's stepping back
PS3 was a pretty dogshit effort by Sony, so they had to step their shit up and offer much better value with PS4. On the other hand, 360 overperformed for Microsoft, then they got cocky and bungled the Xbox One (DRM preventing game sharing bullshit, trying to force the Kinect shit, etc). So now the positions have reversed since last generation. Microsoft putting in the effort to win back consumers, and Sony is back to their PS3-era mantra of "lol shut up and buy it faggots".

Another cool feature in Microsoft’s focus on backwards compatibility:

I’ve tested auto-HDR in a number of backward compatible games on a preview version of the Xbox Series X hardware. And as long as your TV supports HDR, you don’t have to do anything else. There’s an option to turn it off in the Xbox’s display settings, but otherwise, most of your backward compatible games (Microsoft turns it off for some games if it clashes with an artistic vision) will get this benefit.

And it is a benefit.

Hopefully they've improved their overall HDR implementation too, because as it stands now Xbox is really inferior to PS4 when it comes to HDR. Both when comparing multiplats directly and also the best of PS exclusives vs. Xbox exclusives. PS4 HDR just works, while with Xbox I'm constantly going into my TV settings to make adjustments because it's either too bright or too dark.

Another cool feature in Microsoft’s focus on backwards compatibility:

This will be complete bullshit. Calling it now. A game needs to be developed to take advantage of HDR and properly implemented. Good HDR would be someting like Horizon Zero Dawn or Uncharted 4. Horrible HDR will be RDR 2's implementation and this cannot be overlay'd in the sense MS is spinning this.

I'd say 'yeah, it sounds cool, we'll see how it pans out' .... but that article is literally it panning out. I have no doubt it won't be perfect, but the techniques used and the examples they're demonstrating are pretty nice.

Based on what logic do you think AI-implemented HDR isn't feasible? Really doesn't sound all that difficult considering we live in a world where we already have implementations of AI-upscaled 4K that are extremely impressive.

Oh shut the fuck up you pussy.

Look up tone mapping and call me in the morning when you are done sucking Microsoft’s dick.
What about tone mapping? The nVidia Shield, a piece of hardware several orders of magnitude less powerful than an XSX, does tone mapping extremely well.

It does not. Have you ever compared developed HDR (For consoles that also implement it correctly, ala Horizon zero dawn or God of war) and compared it to RDR 2? That’s the difference.

Next we will be talking about how lossless isn’t any better than a compressed audio stream from Netflix.

No one likes you, you’re a faggot, and you know jack shit about proper HDR implementation. About the only thing you can comment on with life experience in is how fast you can hide the pedophile porn sites on your tablet from your husband when he comes home unexpectedly from 6th grade recess while you forgot about the sock hanging from your implanted dick.

Exactly why I brought up RDR 2. Let me refresh your memory of what happened with that debacle.

Faking HDR in an SDR spectrum is what caused this mess.
So your point is that because Rockstar did a shitty HDR implementation in a game 4 years, MSFT can’t implement a hardware-based, AI-enhanced HDR algorithm despite the fact that there’s hands-on reviews and footage of the implementation which are receiving positive feedback?

Correct because they are doing nothing more than altering an SDR source without the proper metadata behind it. I would say the same thing if this was Sony saying it by the way.

But MS is almost always full of shit so it gets a little extra discourse.

They don’t have the games, they don’t have the market. So while I won’t fault their attempts at the smoke and mirrors bullshit they play to distract everyone from that obviously painful fact at this point, it doesn’t do anyone any good to not call out their bullshit either.
