Paul Thurrott(the guy on the right) covers MS for a living, and if he's laughing about Xbox making another console then they are done with hardware essentially. He knows the writing is on the wall despite MS saying otherwise.

Aka it's still "on" officially until we break the news to AMD. We're trying not to lose a business partner while we reneg on our contract
Honestly it will probably just be an xbox branded PC. Or add partners with existing companies.

If they cancel the whole project, guaranteed there are provisions that pay AMD something big for their work and loss of expected income; AMD isn't designing a chip expected to bring in multi-year revenue for a promise. But for MS with like 12% market share at this point and no real plan to win any back, nor willing to spend money other than GAMEPASS!! trying to do so, whatever the penalties are in the contract are worth it rather than built hardware no one is going to buy. That's why they are raising prices on everything: Each sale is something that is never going to come again. They aren't making any more, they aren't growing, so why not make as much as they can from the people who haven't left yet?

The only people they haven't told are the marks, I mean the customers whose money they still need until they can unwind the business into whatever new model they've decided on.

The only people they have to blame are themselves. They're Woke, they bought ideologically infested Woke studios making woke half-assed California garbage and lazy repetitive derivative junk that people are tired of playing year after year. <shocked face> our business don't grow </shocked face>

[Edit]Meanwhile, erstwhile studios that have in the past made great games are either sidelined, closed down, probably beaten down from within by HR/DEI issues or otherwise given projects or deadlines that can't be met. How many are free to create masterpieces that we all sit around and reminisce about? Is there a single Studio that could make a Mass Effect, DA:O, DE:HR, Destiny, Halo, etc? How about even a Crackdown or a Hi-Fi Rush? Are there writers left inside any of the AAA studios who can unironically write a masculine hetero white hero? It won't matter that anything can be an Xbox if all those studios keep cranking out shit games.[Edit]

How many King Candy Crush whales will it take to make that $70B purchase worth it?

This is one of the worst marketing moves I’ve ever heard of. It’s worse than the XSX releasing simultaneously with the XSS and requiring all software released to be optimized for both. It’s very apparent the XSS held back the XSX. Gamepass is holding back Xbox as a whole.

xbox is hardware and it has no exclusives. It’s a console. It’s not *software*. Rebranding it as software is a terrible business strategy. It would be like rebranding a Honda Civic as software. Microsoft is the software. Gamepass isn’t even an OS. It’s an app. An Xbox is not an app. It’s a console that plays Xbox 360 and xbox one games, and like one Xbox series x exclusive.

i got the d4 xbox in 2023 for $360. sadly with the death of my best friend and gaming partner, really only play like 3 games, mostly minecraft. so think it has been well worth the investment as my pc is integrated amd graphic potato at this point that i use for youtube/surfing. funny thing, really the only reason i enjoy minecraft on console is, how much "harder" it is to cheat.
up until this news, my plan was to try to hold out till XbX fell to under $300 and buy another one. really don't have any desire to buy a gaming pc, but will have to upgrade my pc at some point.

Have you considered just getting a steamdeck?

not really, with my old eyes it never looked appealing, but with tv out could be something.
You may need glasses? I didn’t need glasses until I was maybe 30, and my prescription is very subtle but it’s a big impact on looking at digital screens or small book font for me.

I have the Lenovo legion go, which has a 1600p 8.8” screen and a more powerful chip than the Steamdeck, but it’s pretty uncomfortable to hold. I use it docked half the time. My plan originally was to get the steam deck OLED ($550 last year), but the legion go went on a flash sale for $400 and I snagged that instead. Apparently the legion go 2 fixes this issue but is hella more expensive. It comes out on Halloween 2025.

The Steam deck feels like a Switch compared to Legion/Ally like devices, just a much more affordable and balanced approach in comparison with a proper gaming platform feel. I guess Microsoft is trying to make them feel more like the Steam Deck with their Xbox handheld OS but these devices tend to still just be big, complex, and expensive by comparison.

Honestly, I think they all have the same problem of not being that good of a choice for travel and on the go gaming, I always considered them more of an at home alternative or something you would only really use wherever you are staying. There's just something about the Switch(2) by comparison that makes it much more of a go-to for on-the-go.

The Legion Go is a pain in the ass to travel with. The carrying case is MASSIVE. You have to bring an external battery if you want the device to last more than 1 hour. I timed it last night, even at a lower wattage, and I got about 50 minutes through Helldivers on low settings, upscaling, 1200p, before the battery died from 100% to dead. D-E-D dead.

I have this power bank to travel with for my computer, etc. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09VPHVT2Z But traveling with the legion go isn't really worth it. It's large case and the awful glare from the airplane windows, etc, just would rather read a hassle-free book.

Welp - so looks like I am making the final change.

Going to trade in my Series X and hard drive add on with one controller after wiping it clean and use Apple TV (Which streams better anyway) for Netflix and such, keeping PS5 Pro (With no subscription - highly doubt anything good will come out in the next couple years anyway with the way Sony has been with DEI and 1st party title decline in quality) and thinking about just grabbing the Switch 2 on trade so I can play Metroid 4 and whatever else comes out - and giving away the Switch 1 after wipe to charity/donation somewhere. I have Gamepass ultimate cancelled with service running out Aug 2026 but will continue to use it for PC games until then should something come along (Small 1% off chance in the next 10 months) Fully converted to PC for all online and main gaming now.

Kinda crazy - I have had an Xbox of some variation since 2001. Only have about 3 friends on there so I will keep in touch via the app but they are looking to do the same so I am steam friends with those 3 already.

Halo has been destroyed, Bethesda is on life support and I have no hope for TES6 or Fallout 5, Blizzard is completely fried now, Obsidian is a train wreck, and 2 of the "75 day one launches" just came out and they were these two things :p

Meh, unless you're poor you should always keep all the consoles you buy. Even if they're just collecting dust in the attic. I really wish I still had my old Turbografx, Saturn, Atari 2600, NES, and SuperNES. Would be pretty cool to have an entire wall of consoles representing my gaming life.

Yeah I have too much already. Game Cube, two Wii's, Jaguar, Xbox 360, Wii U. Although you make a good point - having the console which Microsoft fucked up services so badly on to destroy their own gaming division could be worth some cash later.

Better trade these in while you can. This is after they said Xbox is not going anywhere but they are in full damage control to sell off what they have. This is also why Costco and Sam’s club are pulling out.

Watching how the GamePass nonsense is heading and all else with MS the wife decided she wanted "A good console with a lot of games that we don't have to be online or pay a sub for".

To that end.... I dropped off our ancient Xbox 360 with a dude today to mod/unlock it and pimp it out. It will include a whole slew of emulator capabilities and "other stuff". heh

Xbox updated the XB PC app and it’s fucking unusable right now. My library is almost all games that I own on Xbox but are not playable on pc unless you buy them again but there’s not an option to filter by games that are only playable on pc so you have to click on each one to see what you own on Xbox and what is also playable on oc.

Xbox is cooked. I’m glad I didn’t hold out to buy an Xbox handheld last year and just got a Lenovo legion go. Albeit I’ll probably just sell that and buy a full fledge pc.

Those were some AMAZING memories of getting my Xbox 360; I wasn't much of a console guy AT ALL. I was way late to the party, in June 2007 I was switching jobs and had a couple of weeks off, it was my birthday, summer just starting. They delivered that big white box, firing up the 360 with XBOX live arcade and Crackdown and really, really enjoying myself. I had gotten an original Xbox but didn't really "get it" and we had played Halo on PC but after the first couple of days I was fully into what the console experience could be.

Yeah same. I am completely done with Xbox from a services and future perspective, but I am still going to hold on to my old Xbox consoles because I bought a ton of games on Xbox and the backwards compatibility has been the best on offer these past two gens.

That said there is no doubt how it feels like a console with no future, sort of the way my Dreamcast felt when it was officially over with Sega's first party support. I still got my Dreamcast and loved how great it once was but when that point happened, when I just kept reading bad news about what was happening with Sega, I knew it was a platform I wouldn't be getting much more out of. Funny enough that's right around when Xbox showed up, and they seemed to take their place, but now it feels like Xbox consoles are going the way of the Dreamcast.

I'm with Utnayan Utnayan with my PS5 Pro being my only home console I will really be buying new games for anymore, and being over subscriptions as well. At $80 their PS+ Essential just isn't worth it for me. Some of the monthly games can seem like good offerings but looking at the games I have installed, hardly anything is from PS+ anymore, and the games I download from there feel more like curiosities I quickly move on from than anything. I tried out the Platinum originally, didn't get enough out of it, then they raised their prices, I went with Essential, and I just don't really play anything that seems to need it, online multiplayer just isn't my thing anymore. To top it off I have come to hate these subscriptions, how they keep getting more expensive, charging me for some basic features that should be free, and any game that requires one is not a game I will want to buy or support.

No doubt I'm getting a new gaming PC whenever this feels antiquated, fuck next gen home consoles, if they are going to become more like PC's I am just going to go full PC where I don't need to put up with their locked down ecosystem bullshit.

If they shut down xbox hardware then they would also shut down gamepass since the vast majority of xbox game pass subscribers own xbox consoles. Don't see that happening. At least not in the next few years. Game pass is very profitable (according to MS), and central to their current strategy of ubiquity of access.

So there will be at least one more console generation from xbox.
