I really doubt Xbox is going to invalidate everyone’s games libraries, it’d be a PR disaster for digital media sales across the industry. I’ll always keep an Xbox because I have a big digital library, but I bet it’ll be playable on pc at some point if they wind down, or go third party for hardware. Them getting out of hardware is pure speculation at this point, but I’m thinking they’re in for the next generation.

And this thing, I’m not sure who it’s for. I love my steam deck, and I get some decent use out of my PS portal when I remember I own one, but $600 for the weak model and $1000 for the premium? Damn. If it were cheaper I’d buy one, but not at that price.

IIRC, a XSX was $700 manufacturing cost in 2020, not including R&D or marketing. They sold for $500 (at the time), losing in sales per console but making up for it by selling games, Game Pass, XB Online subscription, and getting X% off any 3rd party games sold for XSX or in the XB store. It had a lower cost of entry, but a much higher net total spend over the course of 5 years compared to comparable entry level pc builds.

This says $839, but it was probably higher at release. I’m pretty sure consoles have already sold at a loss because it locks you into the only Xbox / PlayStation/ Nintendo etc. That’s beneficial for that company

It looks like the ally isn’t Xbox locked, making it much more useful, and it runs a stripped down windows. I loved the steam deck because it’s helping push linux gaming forward. Microsoft just isn’t the same company they used to be.

Maybe I’ll grab one on sale at some point. It’s a little beefier that the steam deck. The next gen steam deck is what I’m really looking forward to.

Yeah Gamecube was the last time Nintendo tried to compete on power, and despite it being one of the favorite classic consoles these days it wasn't the success Nintendo needed it to be. Basically Sony kicked their ass with the PS1 and PS2. Microsoft came in with the Xbox being the powerhouse console for that pre-HD era, and then they had the 360, always among everyone's favorite consoles it seems. By then Nintendo already gave up on power but was enjoying one of their biggest successes with the Wii era. That basically laid out their path going into the Wii U, trying to find a way to continue that type of console and capability while expanding upon it, but the dual screen concept just wasn't anywhere near as appealing with a home console as it was on a handheld.

By now I am happy with where Nintendo is with the Switch and Switch 2, they have become the default handheld console and it's nice how easy they are to dock with a TV, especially given how the Switch 2 can finally display in 4k. It's definitely become the money printer can't fail strategy for them, they always dominated handheld gaming and kicked Sony's ass there like Sony kicked their ass on home consoles. Meanwhile Sony only took a dip in the PS3 gen and has dominated the home console market with both the PS4 and PS5. Microsoft fucked up badly with the Xbox One launch and their shitty always online idea, and they seemed to be making a comeback with the Series X and S but somehow managed to fuck all that momentum up astonishingly.

Now with their latest console pricing and "everything is an Xbox" marketing, it seems like they have given up on selling consoles at a loss. This makes me think they are no longer going to be serious about being a real platform. I have a feeling the next Xbox is basically going to work as somewhat of a Windows gaming PC that will have optimized games and performance for what will be considered an entry level for PC gaming. If this is what they are doing I could actually see them succeed with that, basically turning themselves into more of a Steam competitor than a Sony competitor next gen.

Other than Wii U and maybe the Gamecube, Nintendo hasn't sold anything at a loss in a very long time.

PS5 lost money at launch, became profitable with the Slim release, then apparently went back in the red with the launch of the Pro because they use the same manufacturing pipeline for both versions which increases the cost of the base models. Pro was profitable from day one, most likely very profitable once you factor in everyone getting bent over without lube if they wanted the system to have basic features like a BD drive and stand.

Series S|X is likely profitable by this point since they've jacked up prices and their costs haven't really changed much, but they sell so few units that they're almost certainly still deep in the red over the whole generation.

Feeling like I called it here. Sony is the only company that will be really offering a classic home console platform, next Xbox is definitely going to be some optimized entry level gaming PC.
I donno, if I can run steam games flawlessly from a 1200 dollar box, I'm taking it. Grown man, can't waste time in a gaming room any more, gotta assert dominance over the main tv in the living room. Kid want's to play Genshin? Too bad, dad has to play Shower with your Dad!

But yeah, 1200 bucks, jesus.
