The new layout YouTube is experimenting with his awful. Even in theater mode there are black bars on the side. I don't use UBlock but supposedly they have a filter you can add that brings back the old look.

I'm pretty sure that shittifying the layout and search results is a form of AI training. Youtube search always was complete ass. A month or so ago it became a borderline war crime.

Safari with AdGuard has worked pretty well for me so far, but means you'd have to watch YouTube in browser and not the app and you'll have some black screen time before the video loads. I imagine there's gotta be a better setup, though.
