Saw a guy in preview miss 99% up close shot. I lol'd

I've never quite understood the rage on this stuff. I guess people think anything with a 9 at the front should never miss?

I mean if somehow you shoot 1000 times and more than 50 of the 95%+ shots miss then I guess you can start to complain and wonder if the RNG is fucked, but hi this is how probabilities work, if it's not 100% it can still miss.

A miss here and there sure, xcom was notorious for a very high miss rate at 99% and you'd do whatever it took to get the 100.
Been to long but iirc there was some behind the scenes math uncovered to show why it was happening and basically the percentages were often way off.

Any long term veteran of tactical strategy games knows those percentages are a complete fucking lie. Real odds are subtract 90 and multiply by ten in my personal experience. Anything below 90 percent in Tactics Ogre or an XCom game is a waste of an action for a prayer. I don't think the game is cheating, per se, but it sure as shit is not giving accurate chance information. Newer games have gotten less obnoxious about it, but it still happens. I can tell you rogue trader is rampant with it in both directions (burst shots hit way more than the suggested odds) and even Fallout in both its turn based and live shooter forms in VATs gave odds with no relationship to reality.

As for the game of the topic? I will wait for what the autists of our board say. The woke comments are a bit disconcerting because games are coming out that are directly telling Woke to fuck off and doing well (Lords of the Fallen 2 is one I am looking forward to). And there have been rumblings that the blue hairs are working themselves into a lather to refight Gamergate again as part of the kickoff to Woke 2.0 they are planning, but I think just waiting a week for the semi trustworthy takes of this board is the best approach.

Hit rates on rookie and normal are actually significantly higher than the displayed % chance, not lower. On legendary the percentage you see is your chance to hit. There's an old interview with Jake Solomon explaining it a bit but fuck if I can find a working link to it.

It was mostly because it felt like the player would miss shot with a 90% chance to land and the enemies would crit you with a 10% chance to hit behind cover

And plus, the first XCOM game that Firaxis did was based off of a random seed generator, that came up with the seeds before you even went on the mission. That means that you could go on a mission, move your soldiers to the exact same positions, and get the exact same outcome. So, that means that if you had 95% chance to hit, you shot and missed. Then you save scummed. It would miss again. It didn't matter how many times you save scummed, it would always miss.

Firaxis won our trust with XCOM 2 / WOTC, but it was a difficult time for Firaxis.

Wait so the only people that was a problem for were save scummers? Lol... That's fucking amazing I never knew that.

The Bloodbowl computer games rather infamously had a pregenerated seed as well that modders were able to figure out the AI was reading and adjusting to. Of course Cyanide's AI was so bad that no amount of it cheating could make it challenging, so it did not matter for single player. But there were people using mods to read the seed and base their in game action selections off of it, which was a problem for a while.

All they needed to do was show the rolls. When you hide the dice, people are always going to assume there's some sort of tomfuckery going on behind the scenes. Nobody complains about games like BG3 for that reason.

Personally I always suspected that the game sometimes rolls against the actual hit chance instead of the 'game is cheating in your favor' percentage and that's why there was so much '95%=50%' talk.

always wanted an Xcom game with a Star Wars skin, so unless it's getting absolutely buttfucked in the reviews i'll be getting it

Well, I'm starting at Amazon on the 17th, so we'll see. Agreed, it is just a data center (*cough*parts swapper*cough*) position, but the pay is nice. So, we'll see.
