Just got back from an early showing. Two others joined who had never read the book, and both of them went in blind. All of us liked it. One friend thought it was great to excellent. Other is interested in the book now - so that's nice. The visuals were very Villeneuve, so no complaints at all...

100M in 3 weeks of the rollout. It will release in an additional 47 territories within the next 3 weeks, including China/US - so things are looking good for a sequel. I have to believe they will announce it while it's still in theaters to draw in anyone on the fence.

Agree. I think 3D is best when used more for depth/scale. The first good use I can remember was Avatar's 3D . I liked the novelty of things 'popping out' of the screen/page when I was a kid, but now it just seems like a distraction (gimmick like you said).
