I think voiced protagonists are essential to good story telling when you have an established character, but, in Fallout, we've always been an unestablished character. Not sure why they felt like that needed changing with FO4?

Depends entirely on the story. I thought FC5 suffered badly from having an unvoiced protagonist.

Because it took so much to use your imagination.

Imagine Joe Sixpack, who works at a factory producing widgets all damn day. Some days, he works 10, 12 hours. That's 10-12 hours of using your hands for manual labor so that they don't, oh I dunno, get chopped off by the huge freaking machine right next to you. When you get home from that, you don't have much to use your imagination for. Much less a game that demanded that you use your imagination every two seconds. All that you have energy for is passive entertainment.

I know what a ton of you are thinking. "I use my brain every day, writing complex code... How am I supposed to have that kind'a imagination?"

Meh, it's just different. Writing complex code and having your hand chopped off like Ol' Stubby Joe are two different things. One, you'll get several errors on a computer screen. The other will involve a visit to the emergency room, a significant other crying, and the definite chance that you will die.

It is a mixed bag. You either get the Gordon Freeman/Chell/Chrono effect (where their muteness becomes more or less a joke) or you get the start and stop text reply to voiced reply situation, which can be a bit "jarring" I suppose. Plus, with text replies, it becomes much harder to show your own character during the interactions. Having your character say nothing, but showing them moving their mouth, then showing the NPC actually speaking would look odd. By showing your character more (a character you designed), in theory it helps the player connect more with said character.

It’s all in the design. When it doesn’t work there’s reasons why. In FO4 there was no need for the main character to have a voice. There’s no use for it outside of conversations and in those the protagonist never actually says what you fucking clicked in the first place.

First Bethesda Game Studios game in years I have 0 interest in. Fallout Rust. I thought this was a side studio, but it's not. It's made by Bethesda Game Studios.

Damn dude. Bethesda.net is crashing already.

Not sure if it's from ppl signing up for the beta, or just interested in TES6.

Prolly TES6.

Yeah everything about that presentation screams griefers paradise, and no vats to be seen anywhere. Bethesda wants to be the next EA , apparently.

We aren't going to see ES6 before 2021/2022 so this is probably the last we'll see of it for years. I have the feeling they knew they had to tease Starfield and ES6 even tho it's not their norm because they know Fallout 76 isn't going to be very successful with their core fanbase.

There are ways that you could have made a MP fallout feel right and not be a griefer grind loot box infested mess. Their presenter pretty much demonstrated they are going the Destiny 2 griefer shooter mmo lite route. Dude practicqlly hada boner talking about players dropping nukes on other peoples settlements. And no direct mention of offline SP, just a crypitc you can play alone statement. This just looks bad 9n every level, and thats before considering Bethesdas track record with buggy releases.

The concepts seem kinda confused to me. They want you to quest in the world, but every character is a real person? They want you to build up a cool base, but it can be destroyed once 'voicecracker69' and his chums decide to nuke you.

I don't get it
