I was getting really tired of open world games. Spider-man was great, but all the side missions felt like repetitive filler. But everything in this game feels fully formed and given attention. And the ways the NPCs interact with you is almost always realistic. There's lots of room to come across or create unique situations. Feels like Rockstar raised the bar for what open world games should be

I felt overwhelmed at first, but i find myself enjoying it more everytime I play. Definitely has some monotonous parts, but the missions /dialogue /setting /graphics more than make up for it.

Wouldn't give it a 10/10, but itll definitely hold my attention for months with my 5 hours a week playtime.

I’m to the point where I don’t care anymore about honor.

I came out of the inn and the sherif was blocking the door and I bumped into him. Instantly I have a $15 bounty and die as 10 people open up on me.

I lose $20 and still have the bounty. I ride out of town and someone on a horse slams into mine, boom, another bounty for unarmed assault.

I ride off and the guy is chasing me, he falls off a cliff and someone sees, bounty goes up.

After I clear wanted, I’m instantly jumped by bounty hunters. I make it to a post office and pay it but they are still shooting at me. I defend myself and bounty is back to $50.

I kill them all, loot their bodies, lose honor each time and give no fucks the whole time.

Will I miss out on anything by not giving any fucks anymore?

Nothing too major, mostly shop discounts and outfits.

Not mentioned there, but there's also a pair of special grips that unlock (ivory for cattleman revolver, ebony for double action revolver) at really high or low honor. I think it's +6 for the hero one, not sure about the other side.

I’m all about a challenge but that whole series of events was unavoidable and all around BS. Maybe when I’m less salty I’ll care again.

Yeah, the only thing I can really suggest there is try to never go to a post office inside the area where you're wanted. Just gtfo entirely and pay it off in another region.

Stumbled across this on YouTube last night. It’s on the long side, but the tl;dw is:

  1. Avoid citizen recognition by using different varieties of outfits/hair/horse (as little or as much variation as you want - the bigger the changes, the longer it takes to be recognized).
  2. You can commit a crime, run outside of the search area, change outfits and wave high to the law men that were just searching for you.
  3. Each time you commit crime in an area the NPCs will remember the outfit you used when you committed the crime. Supposedly the more dramatic the crime, the longer they’ll remember that outfit.
  4. Law men will always identify you and give you a bounty if they see you.
He gives lots of in-game examples, so it’s worth watching if you want to better understand the bounty system.

My Micah mission bounty was only $85. What the fuck did you guys do to get such large one? I headshot all the dudes, but don't see why that'd make a difference. I skipped looting for the most part.

So I just got home and wanted to play, so I start up the game and after about 15 minutes shut it off.

I'm riding towards a mission and there's a prison wagon heading toward me...why not, let's free the guy and cause some havoc, see what happens.

I take out the two escorts, then kill the driver and shotgun, shoot the lock and free the guy. He hops on my horse and bolts, I accidentally shoot my horse while trying to kill the guy. These fucking controls, jesus christ. So anyway, while I'm reviving horse, lawmen come in like 10 seconds there's 4-5 of them blasting me from every angle, horse's stamina is completely depleted, can't eat while getting blasted, horse gets killed, then I get killed. $55 bounty plus I lose 10% of cash or whatever, now my mission is greyed out cuz I have bounty (I think?). I'm not in the mood to ride back yet again to go pay off this fucking bounty just so I can start the mission.

So all of that's funny but it's too goddamn punishing and there's no up side. Where's the reward? I helped some bitch earlier get back to a ranch just before that that was the opposite direction I was heading, 3-5 minute ride and I got a $3 silver ring. In this case even if I "won" the scenario, what do I get? A couple bucks from looted corpses if I don't get insta-witnessed and honor dinged?

So 15 minutes in, I'm like, I'll just go hop on the internet instead.

I want so much to like this game and I keep telling myself not to get distracted but why create this elaborate world if I'm just gonna get kicked in the nuts every time I try and interact with it? I don't mind a challenge but these controls are brutal and again...where's the upside? Why bother?

Calling your horse would have made him rear up and dump the guy, FYI.

Otherwise seems odd to complain about the law wanting to go after you hard for killing lawmen. You should have had some warning via the mini map before they were firing on you, though.

The biggest complaint is the tediousness of shit and the amount of horse riding simulator this game is. Even with the fastest Arabian horse it's still terrible. Ride your horse for 10 minutes to then start a mission and slowly follow Hosea on a horse for an additional 10 minutes before anything actually happens. Then it's five minutes of attacking and running away or something then you're back to wandering around for no real reason again. I mean god damn. You're being a ridiculous fanboi if you can actually defend that garbage.

I'm a patient man but that's not enjoyable. This is making me want to fire up something else.

The irony is that the entire point of the 3-character perspective system of GTAV was to limit this tediousness in comparison to GTAIV. Then in RDR2 they intentionally go the other direction for... muh realism and manage to make it worse than it ever was in GTAIV. Aggravating. This game would be a solid 9/10 or 10/10 if you could just switch characters to limit the periods where you do nothing but ride around.

Now that I'm past honeymoon phase and the cooler parts of the game, I give it a solid 7/10.

This game is a solid 9/10 or 10/10 and anyone who disagrees is free to their opinion, but dead fucking wrong.

I wasn’t surprised at all. But I’m expected to deal with all the chores for “realism” but then we get insta-posses and magic witnesses. They literally showed up about 10 seconds after the fight.

If people want to bury their heads about the complaints go ahead, but people are rightfully calling out some very dumb design decisions.

I’m happy that people are having a good experience with the game but more and more I’m put off by it and I think some people have a case of the emperor’s new clothes.

While I agree there are some peoplel who are rabid RDR fanbois and will defend everything, I think most of us on this forum are jaded enough to know shit sometimes doesn't work.

In RDR2s case though, I give it a pass because its all part of the emergent game play systems and I am a lot less judgmental about that. I'd rather have a lot of complexity and shit go wrong occasionally than something like a Ubisoft game where everything is neutered and toned down so stuff never gets out of hand. Yes, it sucks that posses form instantly but otherwise it is way too easy to murder willy nilly and hide in a corner somewhere. The first time I tried that in RDR 2 the lawmen didn't fucking go away at all, I parked my ass in the upstairs closet in town somewhere, went afk for 5 mins, and when I came back they were still wandering around looking for me. WTF, that ALWAYS worked in these kind of open world games, what is this shit Rockstar! Same thing a million different ways, but I can appreciate them telling me "yeah, we fucking know how you fuck with AI to get away with everything, not gonna be so easy here".

But yeah I acknowledge all the criticism and as I am still on chapter 2 (only playing 1-2 hours a day) I have no idea where I'll end up on my final score for the game, gonna wait until I get to the end. So far I am really enjoying myself, I get just lost in this world and "becoming" Arthur Morgan much more than many recent games. God of War and Spider-man definitely had that feeling, and I definitely felt the same way in Yakuza 0 but most other new games don't have that immersive feeling for me anymore and I really appreciate it in RDR 2.

and as drinsic says its still pretty easy to avoid it all, just save often and I reload if I fuck up. I've run over so much stuff and been insta wanted, a few times I've played it out but now mostly I just reload a save to avoid the hassles. The funniest though was when I ran over a dog at St. Denis. Apparently you can be sorta hated for Animal Cruelty (an actual charge on screen) but they won't sic the cops on you. However, I thought to myself "... well, its a shame to let a dogs corpse lie here, lemme take it to the trapper and get some money". oops. picking up a dead dogs corpse was now a crime and everyone got on my ass.

Since the game is proven to spawn witnesses out of thin air. I wonder if the same is true for law posses. So many times I'll have been in some gunfight and have the posse on me in seconds once I start looting things.

I've read some stuff that suspects looting bodies is tedious as a design decision so you choose to not kill and loot people. But go for for profitable crimes like robbing stagecoaches and trains. But if that's the case that is also a crock of shit because you are incentivizing... not shooting stuff in a wild west game about doing outlaw stuff?

GTA are far more arcadey, fast paced and that goes back to the roots of that franchise.

Red Dead is more simulation.

Complaints which are made regarding the fundamental nature of the differences between the two franchises are misguided. Red Dead is more methodical, on purpose, if that's not your bag that's not your bag, but it isn't a reason to lower an overall rating. Its like going to a Marvel movie and knocking it for not having Batman in it. There are fundamental differences between Red Dead and GTA that are critical to the nature of each franchise. Take the simulation/slow methodical nature out of the game would literally undermine the entire game.

Westerns are, generally speaking, more slow paced and methodical in general, so that aspect from the film industry is also being reflected in the game.

My biggest complaint is that NPCs are constantly rushing you in the midst of combat and you don't get enough time to loot. That's a complaint that an area of the game isn't methodical and slow paced ENOUGH

Regardless, the game is one of the best games of this generation, possibly of the past couple of generations, and if you take any particular piece of the fundamental formula and change it, the game would be substantially changed for the worse.

Load last save. Oh I’m 5 minutes away from the 5 minutes I just rode before this random event killed me and now I have another 5 minute ride back to get to the place I just was? Pass, I’ll find something else to do.

I’m telling you guys, I’m going to try and do the missions and just avoid all random scenarios so I don’t get distracted. But I can’t help but feel this could have been more fun if they hadn’t made it so punishing to interact with shit.

You guys are welcome to disagree or tell me to get good but you’re ignoring some very obvious shit.

Just got this. I definitely appreciate the story but something that bugs me is the controls feel clunky. They actually feel clunkier than Witcher 3 which I didn't think was possible.
