I think you'll need the leaves to get things really going, and lots of them relative to the other stuff. I've read that too much grass tends to make for slimy and not too good compost.

Looks great. Had one of those as a house plant recently but it went horribly. Never put out new growth but seemed stable until I went away for 10 days and it never recovered from the lack of water (for about 6 days, I had a contraption that gave it about 4 days of water worth.

I don't follow any rules when repotting cacti, hasn't hurt me so far! In this case, I'll just wait until the flowering is over. The barrel cactus just isn't growing much where it is and last year there was an entire ring of flowers.

The stenocereus pruinosus that you see right next to the blooms has flowers that are open at night, but also the day so I'm not sure that counts. Bought that at 6 inches around 1990 and it is a 12 foot monster now.
