    Home Improvement

Question from an idiot and complete bumbler on home repair/improvement. The faucet at the bottom of my water heater started leaking so I bought an end cap. Screwed it on as tight as I could with a wrench but it is still leaking (the end cap does have a washer). Was this the wrong solution...

Thanks. Mine will be staying indoors. Southern California in winter is the rainy season so they wouldn't do well outdoors here. I usually let it get down to 60 at night indoors - maybe that will be cold enough. It will be tough for me not to water as I generally worry a lot about...

I think you'll need the leaves to get things really going, and lots of them relative to the other stuff. I've read that too much grass tends to make for slimy and not too good compost.

Looks great. Had one of those as a house plant recently but it went horribly. Never put out new growth but seemed stable until I went away for 10 days and it never recovered from the lack of water (for about 6 days, I had a contraption that gave it about 4 days of water worth.

Just started composting myself. There's a TED talk on composting that recommends the way the Dutch do it, which is exclusively dead leaves (brown) and coffee grounds (green). All other kitchen waste is verboten. I'm trying that method.

Turns out I was needlessly worried about not enough sun for my dahlias as they are blooming fully and there are plenty of buds. It looks a bit haphazard because I screwed up when planting the bulbs. I thought the oblong parts hanging from the bulbs had to be separated and planted - rookie...

Planted some dahlias for the first time (dwarfs, from bulbs) and the first bud is starting to open but it's taking a long time - like several days now and it's still not fully open. Is this normal? I'm worried because they only get about 4 hours of sun per day. Also, the last few days have...

I don't follow any rules when repotting cacti, hasn't hurt me so far! In this case, I'll just wait until the flowering is over. The barrel cactus just isn't growing much where it is and last year there was an entire ring of flowers.

Here's another cactus in flower. This is a small one. I think it's rebutia krainziana but I'm not really sure. The nursery I buy at doesn't label most of its cacti and succulents.

Yeah, I'm planning on repotting it soon this spring. Need to get the soil right, though. The nursery mix is very porous, so I don't think a standard potting soil will do. I've got some sphagnum moss and will mix that in with the potting soil. Did notice a couple days ago that a new leaf is...
