    Camelot Unchained MMO

Once the project reaches their funding goal then all money is transferred to the company at the cutoff date. What the company does with the money is up to them. Funding a kickstarter game project is a crapshoot. But you don't have to fund the kickstarter if you want to play the game, it will...

Nothing to refund. Your card is never charged unless the project is fully funded. If, after funding, the project is never finished then you are sol. Your only option is to sue the company but unless outright fraud was committed you would lose that fight. Investing in startups always has a...

    Guild Wars 2

I solo'd everything, even the boss. Once you know the mechanics it's pretty easy. It's a lot longer if you solo, but I like to explore and was working on the achievements. Didn't want to deal with a group. Group is fun too though, and easy to pick up at the gate.

5 million isnt' enough imo. But if his kickstarter is wildly successful then that might help him get other investors. This is going to be interesting to watch. 2015 isn't that far away.

They already have 400k and its only been a few hours. It will be interesting to see how much he gets after a month. Need a lot more than 2 mil to make a mmo.

You can bet that money source has dried up. Sean is right about the funding issues. That is why the 2d rpg guys had to use kickstarter. Big investors want big returns and they have a lot of options that can give them that. Niche games don't excite investors with fat wallets.

Well first off, remember it's an investment. All investments have a risk of zero return. Then look a the product and what they promising. If it sounds to good to be true then it usually is. Check to see if the person has a history of some sort that instills confidence or not. For webcomics...

Shroud Of The Avatar - Shit Went Persistent

Kickstarter is a great idea and it offers consumers options in the marketplace that would never see the light of day otherwise. But it is also a great platform for scammers. So it is up to the individual to understand the possible risks involved when they invest, which is true in any investment...

Shroud Of The Avatar - Shit Went Persistent

It should be obvious to anyone with any business acumen whatsoever why even successful companies use kickstarter. The money from the kickstarter investors has almost no strings attached. It is basically free money. Only a fool would turn that away.

    The Elder Scrolls Online

You honestly think anyone will approve the funding amounts that STWOR's burned through? Not gonna happen unless they can promise a profit in the first couple of months after release. STWOR expected unrealistic long term sub numbers and sold that to the investors. That failure killed any chance...

You commented as I was changing the sentence to indicate getting funding. People will try, but getting funded is a different matter.

    The Elder Scrolls Online

Most mmo's are successful from a business standpoint, even the crappy ones. That is why they keep churning them out. The new business model seems to expect the biggest profits to come from the first couple of months and then go into low cost maintenance mode, where they get small dividends long...

Shroud Of The Avatar - Shit Went Persistent

Hey don't get me wrong, I have issues with kickstarter and think many of the projects are little more than scams. But this particular one that Caliane is railing against isn't one of them. It's main purpose was to sell a hardcover print of pages that werealready created. It was wildly successful...

Yeah, I'm sure the details have changed since the last time I cared, which was never. The point is that they are very inexpensive to make and no work is involved anymore by the band, yet they are still raking in the bucks. I'm fine with that.

Lol, goods are worth whatever the buyer will pay for it. I just don't understand why you care so much. If people are willing to give him a bunch of money for very little work then let them. It's their money. I didn't give him any cash but I don't have any problem with somebody else doing so...

I just can't get worked up about his success. We tend to reward creative and talented people who do things that entertain us. Look at how much athletes make, or the fact that bands like Pink Floyd are still making bank selling albums (they didn't even have cds back then) they made 40 years ago...

I generally agree with you about kickstarter, but the webcomic you dis is actually pretty good imo. That's why people gave him so much money. The vast majority of webcomics are really, really, really bad. Yeah, he doesn't put out much content but the response he has received gives a lot of...

    The Elder Scrolls Online

It's true that Garriott hasn't done anything recently to justify his apparent belief that he is one of the "great designers". But it is also true that the mmo industry has a serious lack of them. The massive amount of mmo cow dung produced in the last few years is ample proof of that.

    The Elder Scrolls Online

MMO devs can't win this argument. If they make the game playable with 200 or more people on screen then they have to lower polygon counts and reduce graphics. So players then complain that the graphics are ass (and run back to WoW where the graphics are ass). If Devs go for all the shiny...

    Camelot Unchained MMO

Open dungeons are not the problem, the leveling model is. ALL leveling content becomes a ghost town after a couple of months. Especially now with max level being so easy and fast to get to in modern mmos. EQ's low level dungeons only lasted as long as they did because leveling was so brutal...

    The Elder Scrolls Online

Has anyone actually played any version of this game, or is all this back and forth just speculation? Personally I don't give a fuck who makes the game or what engine it uses, the final product is the only thing that counts. Is it fun?

Very doubtful it will be anything drastic. Star Citizen has perma death but the way it's designed doesn't really make it hurt. There are any number of ways to do perma death without it scaring the panties off the player base.

Part of the reason death penalties worked at creating suspense is it forced the player to be more aware of his immediate surroundings or suffer the consequences. I think you can do that without death penalties though. One simple way would be to vary mob speeds. One of the reasons modern mmos...

Yep, in everything from rats to raids, but not as scripted as today's mmo's are. Add rezz's idea of mobs that fight differently every time you try it. The reaction idea has been tried a few times, but with limited success. Part of what makes mmos so boring is the fact that most encounters are...

    Camelot Unchained MMO

I still read his posts as more hype than design. The details he mentions are just talking points targeted at a specific audience he is trying to get money from. Which is typical of all money men. Getting funding is the most important job there is in any industry. It doesn't matter how good a...

    Camelot Unchained MMO

Generally I agree with much of what you have to say, but this is where you go off the rails. Making fun games is as much a creative process as a design process. And the creative process cannot be quantified into any specific formula. If it could then there wouldn't be any bad music, movies, art...

Well that's just your opinion. As pyksel said, it just depends on the end product that actually ships. The vision is just a guide and it will change. Every game in the end looks much different than the initial design docs. As for the hype, Mark has to make people aware of the game so they...

It depends on what you define as pay to win. For some people, just having a cash shop of any sort is considered to be pay to win. The rage that players had for GW2's cash shop before the game even came out was kind of funny. And some people still say it is a pay to win game. I just don't...

EQ was a more social game. It's slower gameplay and the lack of voice chat encouraged a different type of gameplay. That's just the way it was. It doesn't matter if it was by design or not. Different classes/races with unique abilities I think works great in a 3 faction system. Balance is always impossible but with 3 factions it doesn't become game breaking. In a two faction system like WAR though, it was a huge mistake.
