The actual combat of EQ was pretty simple, most modern mmo's have much more complex systems. What made EQ hard wasn't the combat but the world itself and the penalties for failure. Getting through Kael, hoping your invis wouldn't fade. Trying to split a group of mobs hoping your fd would stop...

You forget the importance of rep on the server for getting groups. Long before joining a guild I had developed a rep on the server as a good tank. So groups were rarely an issue for me, even as a SK. Usually had a few tell invites within a few minutes of logging in. Most SK's had a hell of a...

Not every old school EQ player does that. But it is understandable if some do. I only played WoW for a couple of months, but the first thing I remember thinking was how much like EQ WoW was. An exact copy in many ways, except for the ui, art and ease of play. No other mmo ever gave me that...

The Borderlands wouldn't be the only endgame content. It would just be the most harsh, and potentially the most rewarding. There would be plenty of endgame content in the core areas that are easy to travel to and do not have harsh death penalties. This would be content much like we have already...

Your emphasis has been on the easy play mechanics I have included in core casual areas. The real gameplay in my proposal actually takes place in the border zones that have much of the harsh penalties and systems EQ1 had, but that you have thrown away as unworkable. As for AA, "running out of...

Start with EQ1 classic (up to Velious) as a base point. Add an auction house and group finder, but never add instances. Get rid of zoning between areas except when accessing other planes (or shards if a mega-server). Add GW2's deleveling feature (but harsher) and keep unique items (jboots...

It mainly has to do with cartoon (WoW) vs more realistic (EQ1, etc). Girls in general develop socially at an earlier age than boys do. Thus the cartoon style that is so popular in the early teens is something girls tend to grow out of and reject at an earlier age (generally). EQ and EQ2 were...

Those are all fine and workable points. Another thing that is missed in the discussion but is very important is the artistic look and feel of the game. One of the reasons EQ, EQII, and Lotro are more popular with older players and women is because of the more "realistic fantasy" look. Games that...

Well the difference is that EQ was never my whole world. I joined the game as an adult, with a wife, successful career, social sphere and real life commitments that I still love to this day. Many of us in EQ were the same. EQ took a ton of our time and we enjoyed that time, but it never excluded...

Oh come on, trying to backhand belittle me by stating it was my whole "social sphere" implies that you think you are above us mere mortals. And it also makes assumptions about me and my life that you have no knowledge of. Knock it off. And, it isn't about pining for the good old days. It's...

No, what you remember is isolating yourself from the server. Your playstyle didn't extend to everyone else. On my server there was an ingame marriage once that was attended by a ton of people. Not everyone on the server was there, they couldn't be. But everyone was talking about it. A GM even...

Draegan, you are doing it again. I know you want something more than WoW and it's clones, and yet many times your arguments lead to an excuse for what we already have and are bored with. EQ was more than a game in many ways. It was a living, breathing social structure that happened because of...

Good points. But another added thing that helps is a reset button. Early EQ1 penalized players for making poor choices in starting stats. Stat inflation eventually made those decisions unimportant, but in the early game it mattered. If there had been a redo button somewhere, then many people...

Fashion Show EverQuest... coming to a cash shop near you.... I have mixed feelings about it. When EQ introduced dyes, I loved it. But after that it was impossible to tell who had the uber gear. Even though they looked hideous, you knew that that ogre tank sporting rainbow colors did so...

Heheh, aye the cash shop will be full of fluff to buy with station cash. No doubt about that. But thats cool. The people who buy that stuff help pay for cheapskates like me. I gladly pay for extra content, but the super cool hat and jacket are a waste.

Don't overthink the sandbox label. "Sandbox" style games cover a wide variety. The main point is that they are open world, open ended and have some sort of world modifying ability. You're not forced down a linear path. Although it wasn't a sandbox in the strictest sense of the word, EQ1 did...

When (if) Darkfall is working and if people say it is good, then I'll give them my money. I'm hoping they get it right. But I stopped giving money to games because they have potential a long time ago. The Age of Wushu thread has me seriously considering giving them some cash. Sounds pretty...

PvP content is a lot easier to create for sandbox situations though. And a good PvP system can extend the life of the game far longer than a new PvE expansion. I hope EQN doesn't get too far from it's PvE roots, but having a robust PvP option is pretty important in todays market.

I've been wondering what Smed meant when he said EQNext will be "the largest sandbox-style MMO ever designed". I just can't wrap my head around that. In many ways EQ1 was a sandbox if you ignored the quests (like most players did). You went out and explored, found places to level, found...

You are a little late to the party, since the discussion has pretty much played itself out. I didn't expect my offhand comment about them to derail into such an long winded discussion. But it has been a worthwhile debate. LFG tools and their existence go to the heart of what people expect and...
  22. Grim1

    EQ Never

Pretty much. And if you add a mega-server to the mix then the need for cross server tools becomes moot. Imo it isn't lfg tools that killed community, it was the instanced dungeons that isolates everyone from the open world. Instancing then forced the creation of WoW type lfg tools to be invented.
  23. Grim1

    EQ Never

First off NO INSTANCING. Shards (like VG) are fine. Then create the LFG tool to work within those constraints and I would be one happy camper.
  24. Grim1

    EQ Never

Yes, but everyone else isn't like us. And whether we like it or not, LFG tools are expected by the modern mmo playerbase. Ignoring those expectations just hurts the business side of creating a succesful mmo. LFG tools don't hurt any game, but they do help.

Pretty much this but take it a step further. I hate questing the way it is done now. Fill up your quest log then run around like a f'ing retard checking them off. /shrug Haven't had time to try it, bu I hear PS2 is pretty good. Was a huge fan of PS1 for 6 months or so. So they are capable enough. And it may be for the best they weren't approved for the bazzillion dollar budget but instead have to go on the cheap. SWTOR was pretty much forced to be a...

    Guild Wars 2

For more traditional mmo's what you say is true. But GW2 has a different business model. They expect their players to drop out and come back later. That's what happened in GW1. My friends, guildmates and I would play for a couple months, go do something else for a few months, come back then drop...

Lol, right. You go girl. There were a couple bosses you could use a ranger on though. We even had an enchanter tank a LDON boss once, this was right after LDON came out mind you. It wasn't trivial. Don't remember why we used the chanter, I think just because we figured out it could be done.
  31. Grim1

    EQ Never

Yes, Sks and Pals could be dropped in for certain things. Especially snap agro issues. Whenever the main mob got out of control and went after the clothies, a SK or Pal was expected to save them. But the Wars took over as soon as we died. Without defensive we didn't last long. And the more...
  32. Grim1

    EQ Never

It's true and you know it. I main tanked in a mid tier guild as a Sk, but it was old content. When I joined the top guild on the server only Wars were mt for the endgame content. You rotated Wars and when defensive went down, the next one took over. That was true in all endgame raiding guilds...
  33. Grim1

    EQ Never

Then you were doing trivial content. All endgame raids had only Wars as mt. Sk's and Pals occassionally tanked trash, but for the Big Mob(s) it was only Wars because defensive was the only way any tank could survive.
  34. Grim1

    EQ Never

Not in any real raid, trivialized content doesn't count. Warrior's defensive was too strong and that is why there were 8 wars to every sk/pal in most raids. Modern EQ is not the EQ anyone uses as a benchmark.
  35. Grim1

    EQ Never

And that's why there were so many sks and paladins main tanking in raids.... When you start taking out all the things that made EQ1 unique, then guess what? You end up with extruded grey pablum. I'm not saying EQ1 should have every aspect copied, but variety, penalites and rare classes /...

    EQ Never

I didn't say anyting about stronger classes. SK's were never considered a stronger class. There was a benifit to being and ogre or troll if you were a tank. But it was minor and other races did just as well.
  37. Grim1

    EQ Never

If you are going to stick with classes then the original EQ actually did a pretty good job. I even liked the xp penalties for certain races / classes, although the grouping xp penalty for sk's was not a good thing. Making it harder to level certain classes / races makes them rare. And ill...

Some of the "community" folks get upset with them. I'm kind of in that camp also, but purely out of nostalgia. Put me in game needing to do some dungeon for a daily and I get pissed off if that tool isn't readily available.
  39. Grim1

    EQ Never

Some folks don't like them but a decent LFG tool is critical for modern mmo's. GW2 screwed up not having one from the get go. I'm not much of a fan of them but some things have changed too much to go back. Forcing people to group is good, but if you do that then getting a group has to be as easy...
