EQ Next: #1 Next gen MMO

In what year did Verant acquire 989 Studios then? Maybe I'm getting those two mixed up. Nvm. That article linked above explains it.

    RIFT

I only started playing this for the first time towards the end of the summer. I just recently hit lvl 57 so I'm still playing catch up. The expansion seemed aimed at 65+ so I haven't bothered to buy it yet. Was hoping to try one of the dungeons (for example, Frozen Temple in Dusken) but never...

EQ Next: #1 Next gen MMO

Reading that makes me wonder how things might've turned out for the EQ franchise had a company other than SOE bought Verant Interactive back in 1999 (or whatever year it was).

EQ Next: #1 Next gen MMO

"Sony Online Entertainment took a $62 million writeoff in 2013 for development costs associated with EverQuest Next and H1Z1." I couldn't care less that SOE lost money but that's an insane amount of money to have pissed away on two games.

Agreed about the classes being designed well conceptually. I think they just ran out of time to focus on tuning and balancing them correctly before they eventually just said " fuck it". Probably not too long before the parking lot massacre.

That's kinda what I expected. And if that is true, then I think it bodes well for them to repeat that formula here for Pantheon. They got waaay overzealous and arrogant at Sigil with Vanguard and it blew up in their face. Yet despite all of that, they still did release a playable game that many...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

It's way too early to to tell how it will be received. Outside of the obvious (i.e., donors, registered members at the Pantheon website, etc.) one could argue that the EQ Emu community is solid proof of a playerbase that would eat this type of game up. One could also argue that the lack of a...

The size of their team is a concern but perhaps not as much of one in my mind. For starters, I'm not convinced a large staff is good for this type of game right now. Or for that matter, for Brad to manage. Let them expand slowly and strategically to conserve resources. Their website does suggest...

The prognosis for this game is better than some here want to give it credit for. Yes, they still have a long way to go, in terms of both funding and in development, but most of what they have pushed out publicly thus far has been well received. Many were impressed with their first stream back in...

My experience with Necros came much, much later than this, after the dev team addressed some of their deficiencies. Adjusting spell resist checks and the introduction of the high-powered "fast" DoTs made Necros more useful in the raid game and just flat out sick in everything else.

I played EQ for probably 7-8 years. There were only two classes that I had never played - magician and rogue. Magician only because the fact that it was so pet-centric made it feel too close to Necro, which was my main for awhile. Rogue because the class just didn't appeal to me. At all...

Talking about levels reminds me of the three hell levels in Kunark during the 50s. Even though it was purely accidental as to why those three particular levels had significantly longer leveling curves, it was viewed by many as a pretty big accomplishment to see a player make it through them...

I'm sure every one of those people knew full well going into it that there was a solid risk of it not panning out. Having been through a similar experience myself many years ago with a startup, that's just the harsh reality of the business. As much as everyone on the team wants it to be a...

You act as if this was some great crime or something. So what if EQ was inspired by Sojourn. The same can be said for WoW being inspired by what EQ and even UO did for the gaming genre before it. And the same can be said for every other MMO ever released. They've all influenced or had elements...

I'm surprised to see you say this given a) your stance that the industry needs new blood and b) their one game being an EQ re-skin. Can you elaborate on why McQuaid out of that list? Is there something about Pantheon, or perhaps something about VR's team/operations that has you optimistic (even...

Hero's Song by John Smedley - ARPG/MMO Lite

No doubt that both have been pretty shitty at running companies to this point in time. I think there is a big fundamental difference between the two though. Brad always seemed like a designer at heart with a focus on making games that he himself wanted to play. Smed, on the other hand, is more...

    Everquest - Live Servers

Reminds me of the first time I took the boat to Kunark on my first character, a low 20s warrior. I recall nervously boarding the boat from the Kaladim docks with great apprehension, mostly out of fear in not knowing what lie ahead. Shit, I wasn't even sure I was high enough level to even go over...

Too many of you are equating what raiding should be in a game such as Pantheon with raiding as you know it from 5, 10 and even 15 years ago. While some of us love to relive the glory/awfulness/greatness of Fear or Hate break ins, I'm not sure that's what the devs have in mind. That's not to...

That ratio percentage really isn't any different though than the 6 person group doing a 2 hour dungeon run and only 1 person getting the boss loot. I don't recall how much loot there was on the behemoth looking boss in the ice cave in last week's stream. I know Cohh looted something but was...

From what I remember, EQ is where this all started with people selling high end items for real money before it completely mushroomed into an all out plat business. I honestly forgot all about the RMT factor. There's no denying that it has changed the way these games are played, which totally sucks for the typical player who simply wants to enjoy the game for what it is. That does bring up a good point though. I don't recall if the VR team has talked about...

Raiding in any game implicitly requires a heavy time investment by the player, even moreso for those aspiring to be bleeding edge. I doubt they knew what that even meant back when EQ was being developed 20 years ago but they certainly know now. Personally, I was more of a tier 2-3 raider back...

Just because the game's core dynamic is about character interdependence, grouping, and slower combat/leveling curves, etc, does not mean we're going back 20 years. All it means is that there is at least enough demand out there by players would prefer those types of mechanics, whether you like it...

Weapon/caster skilling as we know it was indeed mundane and fairly worthless. But if you remove the system completely, now everyone is the same proficiency in everything. That feels a lot less like EQ to me and a whole lot more like every other game out there. So instead of that, it seems to me...

Because knights should bring a lot more utility to the table than both warriors as well as melee DPS classes do. Just because a warrior may be the best tank doesn't mean you have to have one to put a group together. There may be certain zones, encounters, etc where you might need a warrior but...

Totally agree. I like creating flexibility in making groups as long as it doesn't dilute the importance of specific roles either. A warrior, regardless of stance, should always be a better tank than a DPS class (rogue, monk, etc) in a tank stance. I'm good with said rogue, monk, etc tanking in a...

I heard those comments as well. In fact, they even went so far as to say something along the lines of, if you can figure out how to solo a particular mob, they want to encourage that. Some of today's advancements in the industry should be considered but they need to make sense for this type of game. One mechanic that has been blatantly missing in this genre is that of improved mob AI.
