Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

This is EXACTLY why its so confusing. I have an extremely hard time believing that the entire staff at Sigil felt the same way. Christ. Its hard enough to get 2-3 people in a room to agree on a single thing. But an entire dev team?

I agree. But sometimes, sacrifices need to be made. Problem is, they were made on the wrong end.

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

Well, I never exactly thought Sigil should do a complete 180. Think about it. You said yourself that early on, Sigil was looking at a gamespace of 5-600k. WoW doubled that figure INSIDE OF 6 months, no less than a year-and-a-half PRIOR to Vanguards launch. Of course it should have been viewed as...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

I understand the decision to stick with hardware constraints. Some things just couldn"t feasibly be undone. Theres no need to keep rehashing the hardware issue. I really do understand. What I can"t understand, is why more of the gameplay philosophies weren"t re-evaluated in light of WoW"s...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

Right. And thats certainly understandable. But I don"t understand why the directive never changed with the advent of WoW. Surely Sigil must have had some inclination that the projections of 250-300k initial subs might be jeapordised. Yet they remained relatively firm in the belief that thier...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

Certainly not. But what does this have to do with conciously "choosing" to target the game to an admittedly limited audience? Don"t tell me that decision was based mainly on hardware projections. This team conciously "decided" to limit the games appeal to a specific type of gamer. The hardware...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

This is the part thats always confused me. Why would any team make the concious decision to limit its target audience? Especially when dealing with an outside publisher? Its like saying "we"re building this game for mass appeal to 5% of the total gamespace". I know Sigil wanted to make a niche...

So uh, what? You and all both of your friends who can actually play it in an enjoyable manner are taking a break?

Think about this for a minute: Members of an up and coming MMO development team actually POST on this board. You really can"t help but wonder why

And thats great. For you. Welcome to .01% of the genre. Unfortunately, being in that niche doesn"t evolve the genre. Seriously, its great that you"re enjoying the game. Its just unfortunate that more can"t.

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

As true as that might be, I wouldn"t say that whats going on here will have no effect. I"ve seen this forum, and this thread in particular, mentioned on a number of development forums in the past few days. And if its discussed in that circle, you can bet its being talked about further up. I...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

The thing is, he doesn"t have to. Its already done. Nothing pounds the point home further in this genre, than gamers avoiding a specific game like the plague. To make matters even worse, national gaming magazines and cable television shows are telling gamers to stay away. And that creates...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

Spin away he may. But no matter how much spin he trys to put on this, his company"s problems aren"t going away anytime soon. Because its pretty obvious the genre has spoken loud and clear with thier wallets. For all its "potential", Vanguard failed to deliver on far too many points to lift...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

I understand the sentiment, but theres most certainly much more to be said. When developers begin to expect the consumer to compensate for thier game"s shortcomings, it needs to be exemplified right off the bat, that gamers aren"t going to stand for it. Want to build the game of the future...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

At this point, it doesn"t really matter. Vanguard could have been the top notch contender they were shooting for, but they aimed entirely in the wrong direction by limiting accessibility via hardware constraints. Once LoTRo, AoC, and Warhammer, along with a select few others hit the gamespace...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

Its human nature man. People LOVE controversy. And in the MMO circle, Vanguard is right smack in the middle of it. In all due honesty, I really hope Sigil finds some way of turning this fiasco around. Otherwise, Vanguard remains on the already far too bloated third rate title pile. Its just...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

Yes. But you"re comparing content from a game thats largely unplayable for a huge portion of the gamespace, to a game that is. What i"m telling you, is that within those parameters, it doesn"t matter how much content Vanguard has, what its scope is, or how much variety it has, because only a...

Yeah. The point is in your "fixed" reply. Read up
  20. R

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

No, it isn"t. Because you claiming that Vanguard has a higher quality and quantity of content doesn"t mean dick to those who can barely even run the game, are subjected to countless bugs and glitches, are having a hard time finding people to group with easily, or were looking for all this...
  21. R

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

Yes, I read it. You want to compare two games point by point. And i"m telling you its not possible. Think about it. Who really gives a shit how much, the variety, or the scope of content in Vanguard, when the IP is largely an unknown? Do you think the general populous of today"s genre really...

Yeah, but "without" SOE and LucasArts
  23. R

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

They really cannot be compared. And even if they could, Vanguard would be at a serious disadvantage. Mainly because LoTRo is based on a high profile, extremely well known IP, and set in a familiar world of characters and locations true to Tolkiens works. Vanguard can make no such claim...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

Been following this for quite some time myself. I was turned onto it by a customer I did some work for about a year and a half ago, who actually knows a couple of the guys on the Offset team.Trulynext gen stuff, and could quite possibly set the genre on its ear. I hadn"t visited the site in a...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

I just hope this fiasco serves as a lesson to developers of the many up and coming games. Because if this type of design philosophy becomes the norm, the MMO gamespace is about to take a giant step backwards.

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

I can hear the rumble of 100k+ "hardcore" vanbois growling in the distance. Seriously though, i"m sure you"ll get those who will accuse you of "WoWifying" Vanguard. But if it gets more people playing, it"ll be worth the tradeoff. Falling 30-50% below the expected turnout is pretty serious...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

And thats really the cruxt of what every gamer that looks at Vanguard needs to consider. Its not that unreasonable for developers to expect that gamers may need to upgrade some. As technology advances forward, requirements escalate. And I think most gamers expect and accept that. But when you...

Which was why I asked for action shots. Because I suspected he either had a high end machine, or was cranking everything up for the screenshots. His rig is definitely above what the average gamer in todays genre has access to. At best, the "average" might be able to look forward to playing...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

I concur. It"d be nice to see some combat oriented shots, or even some pics of populated areas of interest, instead of the same old crap all the time of a single character out posing in the world somewhere. Wheres all the shots of these fantabulous dungeons everyone"s talking about? Or the boss...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

I still think everything looks "too clean". I"m no "graphical techie", but it looks very odd to me. Very artificial. Even the ground looks clean. And it detracts from the world immensely. The gnomes robe does look quite nice. Very detailed. But a bit too nice actually. It makes it seem as...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

I"m of the same sentiment. Especially in a quick reaction dependant environment. Live chat is unequivocally faster and more effective than text. I"d certainly rather have the most annoying voice i"ve ever heard telling me a sniper is about to dust my ass, than to hope they can type faster than...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

While quitting would certainly be your prerogative, I think the voice tone of an otherwise exceptional player is of minimal importance. I play WoW in a guild with a girl with the most annoying voice i"ve ever heard in my life. Honestly, i"d rather listen to a 5 hour sermon from my mother-in-law...

Yes, Tabula Rasa will include fully integrated voice chat. But from what I understand, its only active within the group setting. If there are clan channels or not, i"m not sure. As far as your concerns go, if integrated voice comm goes mainstream in mmos, it"ll all come down to...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

I can certainly agree with that. But I blame it on the digital millennium. "Talking" doesn"t mean typing into a chat box anymore like it did back in the glory days of early M59, EQ, or AO. Its a literal thing now. Many guilds in WoW fire up a Vent or TS server. Not just for raiding mind you, but...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

More importantly, its fun. And for many (not all as evidenced in some of the posts here), its that combination that Vanguard is lacking. Its dumbfounding how many developers today say "our target audience is.....". Although many might not agree, thats what gave WoW its edge on the mmo market...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

You"re right. It does always get better. Unfortunately, graphics improvements/optimizations will have ZERO effect on gameplay issues. I played EverQuest2 on its lowest setting for 6 months. Sure, it looked like shit, but I enjoyed it because the gameplay was able to keep me logging in...

Why all the nerd rage against Vanguard

Realistically, I don"t think something that simple would be enough to resolve Vanguard"s issue. What if its a healer, or whatever class would get that ability that the group actually needs? Or perhaps the group is shy 2 or 3 members? They"re still looking at upwards of 10 minutes to assemble in...

I think the biggest complaint at the moment is the lack of easy intercontinental mobility. Continent based ports won"t alleviate that.
