    Desktop Computers

Looking for a little tech advice before black friday ends. Looking for a budget rig (around 1k). Spent a lot of time on newegg assembling a pretty good (as far as I can tell) set up, but then I found this: Asus - Gaming Desktop PC - AMD Ryzen 7 3700X (8-Core 3.6 GHz), NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060...

Well that's a testament to the difficulty of a brand new truly classic server. Really surprising, actually. I'm sure at least a few people are taking turns playing characters nonstop in shifts. I wonder how long it took for the first character to hit 50 when Live released back in 99. I have...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

It's been said lots of times, but VG had some truly great design ideas (movement while casting, defensive/offensive targets, diplomacy, class design, upgradable pets, etc). But the game stands as a perfect example of what happens when you try to cobble a bunch of good ideas together without...

LD deaths... Man I had a lot of LD deaths. I can't believe how much time I spent looking for corpses in the Drachnid area of the Dreadlands. Still my least favorite mobs to this day.

It was a totally different game than EQ. I actually enjoyed that server for a while and it was pretty popular, but, like you mentioned, they changed mechanics in some pretty serious ways. Way more than just spells- they changed things with encounter lockouts, a combat status, increased ooc...

Not usually a fan of custom servers (though I've played on a few that were great), but seeing lines like that make me realize how much a custom original EQ server is needed. Just about every custom server I've played on either uses a client from well after the original trilogy or the admins...

Speaking of a new red server, anyone making any concerted effort to get a board guild going for that server? Having an organized, planned guild to jump into from the get-go would definitely influence my personal decision to play a new server like that.

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

I've noticed that you can definitely over engineer race/class equivalency in RPGs to the point that choice of race/class starts to feel pointless. It's not a bad thing for some races to lend themselves to certain classes (or playstyles)- in fact, it's a good thing. I think where you draw the...

Project 1999 - Making Norrath Great Again

Definitely the worst race/class starting experience in original EQ. I would be lying if I didn't admit I started an erud necro shortly after release and switched to another race/class almost immediately. When I rolled my necro it happened to be night.

    Breaking Bad

Fitting conclusion to one of the best series ever. They did it right. Two thumbs up on Arden's Overly Critical Movie Reviews. Reminded me of the Deadwood movie in what it sought to accomplish (and how well it pulled it off).

Nice, did something similar to a group of NPCs in one of my campaigns, except we stuck a really dangerous goo in a bag that was supposed to be holding loot we were using to pay off the gang. The goo itself only got one of them when he opened it, but it made for a nice opening to our surprise...

Bullshit. You're just as qualified as anyone else who has ever tried GMing for the first time. It's not like there are degrees or training programs out there that give you a certification. I won't say it's easy, because it's not, but the fact that you have participated in the game as a player...

Yeah, the more I thought about it, the more a 2-3 year timeline made sense. Plus Rogean is thorough, but notoriously slow. I might have to come out of retirement for a green version of red. One of the best part about playing pvp live was no lines or "calendars" at all.

No idea what their rinse and repeat timeline is. Are you quoting server staff or just guessing? That would be kind of a long timeline, but it wouldn't surprise me. I stopped playing blue years ago when I found myself waiting in long lines for everything. Fuck that. Very little in life is...

If they end up doing what they initially said they would do with green and blue, you'd be better off just waiting until the second or third wipe/rerelease of green before bothering. The ridiculous crowds will be seriously thinned at that point.

    Lawyer costs question

    1. Get a fee agreement that delineates exactly what you are paying for and how (flat fee, hourly, when the fee is earned, etc) 2. Check with your State Bar or Supreme Court to find out if the attorney you are hiring has any public discipline

Never messed with a VPN. My (limited) understanding of VPN is that it masks your IP- does it spoof it? Can you control where it looks like you are coming from or is it random? If it routes me through Norway or some shit it's not really going to fix my issue. I need to appear like I'm coming...

Great ideas are cheap. Making them happen is really expensive. The ability to properly assess your resources and limit your scope accordingly is an invaluable skill. Obviously, I have no idea what went on behind closed doors, but this is probably where lack of experience hurt the VR team.

Split parties is actually an annoying reality for pnp RPGs. Sometimes the natural course of the story (and people being true to their characters) results in the party splitting up. As a GM, it's annoying having to cut back and forth between two groups. You can do things to encourage party...

It's a college town, but a really, really expensive one. The town is right in front of the Flat Irons (mountains) so it's gorgeous and the amenities are off the chart. A crystal clear river runs through Boulder and there is an awesome white water tubing park right in town. You can grab a 12...
