You must have been on a time locked server, because EQ was well past Kunark when it came out. If I remember correctly, it was on to Omens of War before WoW and EQ2 released. That would mean you missed Velious, Luclin, PoP and GoD.

For me, I am having trouble with the massive downgrade in graphics from normal classic to Turtle. Now, I have seen videos of Turtle that look amazing and realize there is something probably wrong on my end. Everything seems to black , dark, and washed out...almost like textures arent loading...

Something to do with them capping the level at 15 to keep the player base close together while people couldn't log in. Apparently completing quests after you hit 15 and would no longer give you experience was paying out a lot of gold.

The key to getting in is waiting for them to bring down the server and then trying your luck and resetting you spot in the que. Folks have said they have sat in the que 3 to 4 hrs, and then there is an unannounced server restart that kicks everyone and restarts the process.
