    The Back to School Thread

If by "theoretical math guy" you mean i believe that theory should be taught instead of computations, then yeah, thats me. If you mean "theoretical math" to say "pure math" then no, not really. My interests are definitely more applied. The reason i always bitch about computations is because when...

Solutions are generally worthless for upper level math classes. What solutions are they going to give you when you are writing proofs? Defeats the entire purpose.

IT/Software career thread: Invert binary trees for dollars.

Ruby is a recent addition to my hobbies. I primarily use Python (will be going balls deep into c++ over the summer as I have to do a bit of research in computational topology and c++ has decent libraries for it) Anyway, I wanted to write a few websites in my off time but hated the shit out of...

    What do you do?

Personally I always hated the thought of paying a large amount of money for what I consider to be an appliance. A complicated appliance but an appliance nonetheless. Can my infiniti get me to my destination the same way a benz can? Yes? Then why pay more?

I am with you. I am not a big fan of hand waving to produce "magic" (I mentioned as much a few posts back). Having said that, programming anything when you dont understand wtf is going on is going to take 10 hours of googling. I dont think its limited to Ruby. The benefit of ruby/rails is the...

If gays discriminate against straight people, the party discriminated against should be afforded legal remedies that are currently being denied to gay individuals under this new Indiana law. That is, the people being discriminated against should be allowed to sue the party doing the discrimination.

Its both. Lots of hand waving in Ruby/Rails. But with Ruby you can code something up in a fraction of the time it takes to do same in Java or C++. As far as scalability, lets just say not every company is Twitter and its not an issue.

Some people are not crazy about the "magic" of higher level languages. Personally I find that learning c/c++ as a first language allows one a much deeper understanding of the higher level languages like ruby. The abstraction in such languages always bothers me as I prefer to understand what the...

    Equal Pay for Equal Work?

Well we really dont know what skills Jake has. He says he is better than most others on his team so i am assuming proficiency in 2-3 languages and a solid knowledge of data structures and a rudimentary understanding of complexity analysis (i dont think these assumptions are a huge leap). This...

    Equal Pay for Equal Work?

I realize that. I didnt read his entire post and jumped to conclusions. I mentioned that earlier. I am dumb, Lyrical is right. I cant agree with this. Unless he is in some specialized field, a generic CS degree is not useful once one has experience. Jake said he has 2 years experience in...

    Equal Pay for Equal Work?

That part is correct. I called him stupid because i am not that other shit that he said. Anyway, experience trumps degrees with programmers. If Jake wants more money, he needs to brush up on his interviewing skills (lots and lots of data structures) and then switch jobs a few times. Degree not...

And what does any of that have to do with software development? I wonder, did they teach you about supply and demand in business school? Because here is a tip, the demand for semi decent developers, or better, is through the roof and way outpaces the supply. Anyone with a few years of experience...
