I have not seen this new Ghostbusters, but what you are describing is pretty typical of american comedies. They have an idea for a funny starting situation, so the movie start with a lot of comedy elements and then they realize they have to resolve the situation to tell a story and the comedy...

When you do a family action comedy blockbuster a huge portion of the audience does not read reviews. With social media these days though it's possible that I was low-balling it with my 20% guesstimation. That's why it would be interesting to have an actual survey: to not guesstimate!
