5th edition has some problems with class balance for sure, paladin/warlock is broken, totem barbarian is broken, Bladesinger in the hands of a min maxer can stack certain attacks as well for insane one shot hits.

I have beaten it a couple times now, CC traps(ice nade, bear traps etc) plus auto damage turrets has gotten me both wins. Also crit daggers, as long as that third hit lands it auto crits.

Yes do all optional. Kid gloves feel may be due to it attacking your palico instead of you, also shields have added defense and early on that +10 is huge.
