I don't disagree with what you say for the most part, but I've highlighted two statements that are at odds with each other. The demand for argument, for discussion, doesn't come strictly from the media providing the impetus.

It's easy to blame the media, but they are just catering to what people are interested it. I mean take this forum for example. Not a perfect subsection of the population, but the Navy Yard shooting is what gets a thread and discussion, and Colorado which is almost as devastating death toll-wise...

It could be any number of things. The lack of fragmentation does still make it easier to program for the iPhone I'd assume. Could be a little bit of lag from when Android actually over took the iPhone. Could be that iPhone users are more likely to spend money on that type of thing.
