I don't think he's even interested in buying one. The Apple Watch is juicy troll bait.

    Smartwatches / Fitness Trackers

I own one. I wore it all the time until the good folks at work discovered that it does Bluetooth, and I'm not permitted to wear anything wireless where I work. Now, it collects dust, and I'm back to a good old-fashioned watch that does nothing but tell the time. I couldn't wear an Apple Watch at...

    Smartwatches / Fitness Trackers

Wait, Column, let me get this straight -- You're set on buying this thing because it integrates into the "Apple ecosystem", which dozens of sports addons already do, and because you might save a few seconds of time at the airport by showing a TSA official something they aren't used to seeing...

    Smartwatches / Fitness Trackers

I'm a fairly hardcore Apple fanboy and I will not waste a single cent on this thing. They need to do better to even be on my radar. Some of us do use our brains, yes, although there will no doubt still be legions of drooling troglodytes standing in line for their first kick at disappointment...

Yes. Absolutely no point in buying the thing. Won't even ponder touching it until there is a 2.0.

    Desktop Computers

OK, so anyone with a media server or any kind of reasonably sized business app will max out on writes before they get to 5/10 years, realistically. And here I thought 3 years was good. Huh.

Anyone know the factory warranty numbers on Samsung SSDs? Just bought a couple SanDisk SSDs for cheap and they come with 3 years, which surprised me.

Keyboard and Mouse on a PS4

Who cares if it's frowned upon? If you want to do it, do it. I mean, unless you really care what some 12-year-old child thinks of your skillz.

Was going to type something long-winded, but tl;dr: The malware author probably wants $500 for your files. SpyHunter is $40. Sounds like a better deal to me.

    Smartphones

I've replaced batteries on a number of iPhones. It's not hard, unless you're a complete numpty, and the new battery costs a lot less than bringing it to Apple.

    Smartphones

I'm sure that's what they said about the iPhone before it was released, and now we've got $50 Chinese knockoffs that are basically functionally identical. All things in time.

Final Fantasy XIV (Guide in first post)

Again, this is a FF game. If you didn't expect a FF story, I'm not really sure what to tell you. It involves the NPCs in the story as much as it can, but inasmuch as you can't control the NPCs like you can in many other FFs, they will probably only ever be peripherally involved in the main quest...

Check temps, especially the video card if you're running with Aero on. Sounds like a driver lockup to me if you've eliminated the hard disk. That said... If you can, try to get the event viewer open and see if there are any events from the Disk service (they'd be in System). chkdsk doesn't...

    Windows 8

I had UAC and Admin Approval mode disabled via GPO on my home domain. The Start menu on build 9926 doesn't work, at all, with Admin Approval mode disabled. Not sure about the UAC mode itself. They are two separate things. So, I'd enable UAC/AA, restart, everything would work fine, then I'd...

    Need new Antivirus

Really not. SEP still manages to bring my work PCs to a halt, and they are some reasonably beefy workstations. Symantec, doing it wrong since Norton.
  24. Alkorin

Alright, valid points, but isn't it pretty much the same thing if you overclock to get that extra 5 fps that you really don't need anyway?

My one beef with Windows 10 so far: Apparently, you need to have UAC on for the Start menu to work??

    Desktop Computers

Yes, although laptop, not desktop. Normally, I'd tell you to stay clear of them, and that they aren't worth the brand markup. In this case, I'll say this: They're decent systems for the most part, you do get reasonable quality out of Alienware (vice Dell) systems, and their customer support...

Dumb question: Have you tried this mic on another computer? Eliminate the variables.
  28. Alkorin

    Need new Antivirus

For the most part, no, you're not nuts. Some of them don't really bog you down. Some are much worse than others (e.g. SEP). The only real problem in running with no AV is you won't know you're infected with something particularly nasty until it's likely too late, unless you actively watch for it.

Vivaldi - new internet browser for power users

It installs extensions from the Chrome Web Store now, so everything is running like Chrome. Except the browser is in debug mode and slow as hell, and there doesn't seem to be a way to view extension icons, meaning you have to access and configure them through vivaldi://chrome/extensions.

Cord-Cutting, Or How to Stream your Way to Success

Yeah, I don't use the VPN from the PC on my desk, only the one on the TV that plays from Popcorn Time. Might have to look into SickBeard and CouchPotato, though, if only to avoid the wars over which version of PT is the "right" one and to be responsible for my own setup instead of relying on...

Cord-Cutting, Or How to Stream your Way to Success

I think I'll probably drop my seedbox now, actually. I see no reason to keep it going now that I can use PT to watch 99% of what I want, and SSL + IPT/TorrentLeech for whatever I want to actually keep. My ratio at IPT is so ridiculous that I'll never have a problem at this point.
  32. Alkorin

Cord-Cutting, Or How to Stream your Way to Success

Yeah, that's kinda where I was going with this, especially with Popcorn Time and a VPN. Click on something, click on Watch, and done. No storage, no moving files around, no nothing, just a movie on the screen. You can keep the files when it's done, but... why bother? If I want to see it that...

Cord-Cutting, Or How to Stream your Way to Success

Who are you with? Might look into this. I would rather not torrent if I can grab from a newsgroup instead, and I'm not gonna go nuts over a few more bucks per month.

Cord-Cutting, Or How to Stream your Way to Success

Popcorn Time + vpn seems like a good deal. Anyone have any negative experiences with this? Cheaper than the newsgroup option and generally speaking, newsgroups are shit for retention past a fairly short amount of time, no?

Bill Gates Says AI Will Be As Dangerous as Nukes

Well, yeah. My response was predicated on the idea that we will attempt to make AI behave "like us". Hopefully, we're not nearly that stupid, but human beings have unsurpassed amounts of arrogance as a race. Although, I would like to note that "emotions don't emerge from intelligence" could...

Bill Gates Says AI Will Be As Dangerous as Nukes

Yes, if you ignore the obvious bullshit, we are stupid enough, as a race, to find ourselves in that situation. Of course, you probably stopped reading at "The Matrix". In which case, nothing to see here, move along.
