    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

I don't usually agree with Tenks, but when I do you can be damn sure he's right.

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

And what happens? Without my wisdom to guide one, one might end up posting idiotic shit like this: Because you would totally store info about your mana pool on the client and not the server? Oh wait, you wouldn't do that at all unless you were a complete moron. That information would reside...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

Sweet. A response that is an admission that you don't know shit about different mana systems in RPGs. Thanks for playing.

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

I won't defend the non-implementation in a mostly non-existent game (Pantheon) but with respect to colored mana in RPGS generally, you have no idea what you're talking about. Go play a couple hundred games of Realmspeak and get back to me. Properly done it creates an interesting dynamic...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

Properly, colored mana is a class mechanic and class mechanics and combat need to be developed simultaneously before you do anything else... so yeah, needs to be first thing worked on.

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

Colored Mana works great in an RPG: the single best RPG boardgame's (Magic Realm) mana system is color based. The most well known colored mana system is probably MTG - but that's not a very good implementation of colored mana: in a game of MTG you end up with either too little mana early or...

What classes from all other MMOs would you bring back into a new Game?

Let's not since that's not an MMO. I'm well aware of your feeling on roles, and we couldn't disagree more. Rules (aka limits) are what make for interesting games: roles in an MMO are the set of rules (aka limits) for playing a character - the fun part is figuring out those limits and doing...

Thread: Blizzard Conducted A WoW Former Player Study. Here Are the Questions Asked

The problem isn't the rate of content creation: the problem is that the every expansion guts the previous expansions content and achievements. Which means that all the energy you spent getting that purple item in Vanilla or TBC or X is absolutely pointless as soon as TBC or WotlK or X+1...

What classes from all other MMOs would you bring back into a new Game?

It's a different and worse problem for skill (buffet) systems. In a class system one or more classes can feel useless for a particular period but that's fixable without creating a new flavor of the month in theory, if not always in practice. In buffet systems you will always create a new...

Had the best starting areas and arguably best 10-20 areas. After that, nothing.

What classes from all other MMOs would you bring back into a new Game?

And just like buffets everywhere, buffet style systems are light on taste and long on empty calories.

SOE Becomes Daybreak / Russian shutdown

That's just bad reporting. The quote they cite and you cited earlier says nothing about renewing or not renewing the contract and everything about shutting down the company. Now whether something was said in a private call between the two who knows - but the reporter doesn't cite the call, they...

SOE Becomes Daybreak / Russian shutdown

Pretty sure that's about their decision to end their business not terminate their relationship with SOE.

SOE Becomes Daybreak / Russian shutdown

I don't recall SB ever saying that. They said they were the ones who decided to shutdown SB and that had nothing to do with SOE/Daybreak. I thought it was understood that SOE/Daybreak ended the SB relationship.

SOE Becomes Daybreak / Russian shutdown

Fair enough. Except for the last bit - no telling WTF SOE/Daybreak is thinking these days.

SOE Becomes Daybreak / Russian shutdown

I have no idea what AI goal Daybreak is shooting for these days. Are these goals listed somewhere? With respect to Storybricks: the basic concept seemed pretty simple in concept, no clue as to execution. 1. Instead of faction with groups, you have faction (let's call it "standing" to...

SOE Becomes Daybreak / Russian shutdown

Eh. That's fine - my main point was directed to the guys who couldn't accept that SB could have found funding to buy SOE. With respect to the technology, I too would have liked to seen a better demonstration of the technology than what I've seen (which is most of the old SB videos).

SOE Becomes Daybreak / Russian shutdown

Hard to say about the timing. I don't know, but I suspect that Smed fucked SB over with the classic: hey tech guys work for us for a year or two at a convict labor rate and if we like your stuff I'll get Sony to buy your tiny company for millions, honest. I suspect that SB saw the fuckup that...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

Can't be emphasized enough. Brad should stick to ideas/design and leave management to someone else. If he ever did that with Pantheon, I'd be far more optimistic of its chances.
  20. tad10

SOE Becomes Daybreak / Russian shutdown

And then nothing. The SB guys have stated they had the money lined up for the acquisition when they went to negotiate with Sony Japan with their offer. That and some M&A attorneys are all you ever really need for any acquisition ever in the history of the world (barring acquiring land from...

SOE Becomes Daybreak / Russian shutdown

To whom are you referring? If SB, then you don't know what you're talking about, if Astral Projection, then you do, and I agree.
  22. tad10

SOE Becomes Daybreak / Russian shutdown

What didn't you get? It wasn't SB that was going to Buy a faltering SOE, it was an investor group that an SB guy or guys had rounded up that was going to buy SOE.

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

Bah. Scope creep. The original dual archetype thing (IIRC) was ridiculous. Just do traditional EQ classes and work on something innovative with the inevitable quest system (/mourn StoryBricks) and/or combat. Don't try to make everybody a hybrid: road to Hell paved with good intentions and etc.

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

No. I (we're) questioning why you're not making the game the way it should be made: one or two zones, work on combat/classes, iterate until combat and classes are fun - make lots more zones.
  27. tad10

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

Yeah. No. If Brad and Co. had spent all their time working on developing a demonstrably fun game within one or two zones they could take that to kickstarter and get fully funded for the rest. People, such as myself, didn't fund the kickstarter because there was nothing there.

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

Way too many zones and effort into art. You should have made one zone and just worked on combat and the engine in that zone until you were happy "with the current performance." SMH.

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

Eh. that sounds a bit wack but it was a PvP game. A little too generic: piercing for example might normally do less or much less damage than a mace (crushing) vs Plate but if you crit (indicating that you pierced through the armor) should have a much higher chance to crit. Anyway, I'd like...

    38 studios Auction Nov 14th and 15th.

Just want to comment on this briefly - as we all know Schilling used to visit the foh forums where, after he announced the project, he was told repeatedly to stay focused and have a narrow scope. He ignored all of the various naysayers with comments like: we're making a AAA title, go big or go...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

All great games are based on Rock Paper Scissors (thus your DAoC example - presumably Hib was best against Alb??). With respect to different weapon types granting different abilities, the same could be said of different armor types. A Fighter just wearing Leather might be granted a "Leap...

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

That doesn't bother me: keeps players interested in weapon drops even if they already have a very good primary weapon. In one sense it's analogous to granting specific resistances to bosses (Fire Elemental Boss is fully resistant to fire) and forcing magic-using types to use different spells...

I think that's the consensus at this point: followup question will either survive past Alpha?
  34. tad10

SOE Becomes Daybreak / Russian shutdown

I'm not entirely convinced you know what you're talking about: Smed hired and promoted those people. Smed approved their budgets. Smed has been running SOE into the ground since 2003.
  35. tad10

SOE Becomes Daybreak / Russian shutdown

You guys still don't get it: Smed is the bad guy. He's the main reason EQ and SOE were crapfests at the end.

    Pan'Theon: Rise' of th'e Fal'Len - #1 Thread in MMO

I don't remember how it worked in WoW but logically developers should stop worrying about dps and speed so much and design around the types of damages these weapons deliver: slashing versus crushing in the case of a sword and a mace. That combined with a good weapon specialization skill system...
