The LOTRO problem: cool world, the epic questlines were interesting (though the myriad of kill 10 x quests weren't) but the combat was pure meh.

Reminds me of a buddy of mine named Bob. I think he was similarly focused in WoW and EQ. Was never much of a trader myself.

I'd go with combat. An interesting living world with crappy combat gets you some kind of fantasy Second Life.

Nice post, speaking seriously for a moment, video games are as subject to the second system effect as any software product. Both EQ2 and Vanguard are perfect examples of the second system effect in action. Since all the important developers seem to have already gotten their "second system"...

Enjoyment of anything is about 50% expectation. I enjoyed Vanguard because I didn't expect it to be anywhere close to perfect. I enjoyed day 1 on The Combine and Fippy because I expected day 1 to be a clusterfuck. Keep expectations moderate and you'll avoid depression.

I think the country has become increasingly polarized and once people start rejecting the Justice System (however defined) as a means for resolving disputes (think Dredd Scott) war is inevitable. Don't forget there are a lot more people from Southern states in the military than Northern states...
