R.A. is a pretty good author. I loved reading his Star Wars books. Put some nice flavor on it. 38S"s got a good mix of talent on the top end. Good writer, good artist and a baseball player that loves MMOs and has the money to spend.

This is a great idea. I like it. But after a while it"ll turn into repeatable quests WOW has. You go out and farm X and you know NPC A.B.C need it. It"s ultimately the same thing but just worded differently and executed differently. You"re still collecting bear asses, but you"re "selling them"...

If your hardcore game is not all about tedium and raiding and more about difficult gameplay mechanics I"m all for it. But if your hardcore MMO just forces me to play with 5 other peolpe 5 hours a day to gain 1/4 a level then I"m gonna have to say no to that, and it wouldn"t be successful.

I don"t think I voiced a personal opinion, I"m just talking business sense. What"s going to make you the most cash. What makes EQ1 > WOW? What, in your own opinion, makes one better than the other? 1. Quests that give you a vague hint on where to go and you must go out in the world and search...

Well define hardcore. What elements make up this hardcore game of yours?

As far as epic WOW quests. Do the attunement quests. If you ignore the PITA heroic and raid elements to them, they set a story up for you quite well.

If you have a gamer pool of lets say 4,000,000 people (arbitrary number) would you want to make a game and appeal to 400,000 people or 3,600,000 people? You"re not guaranteed 100% appeal to each group so if you"re gonna hit or miss you might as well take a shot at the biggest group of people...

Thats a very small market to appeal too, doesn"t make much business sense.

Number #1 rule to making an MMO. Don"t cater to the hardcore and the catasses. Make the game fun to as many people as possible at the same time. I think what you suggest is the worst design philosophy ever. Then again if this is just a pet project for Curt (and I don"t think it is) he can do...

So you want to figure out what to do next? I can see that desire. I"m not sure if that"s good or bad in the game world. Did it work well in EQ1?

And to reiterate, that is all you do in TBC. That describes WOW 2.0 to a tee perfectly. (As well as the two new Blood Elf and Draenei starting areas.) They learned a lot with during the first part of the game.

So you would rather have two sections in a journal or quest log that has "Quests" and "Task" just divide them into two different windows? I think you"re just arguing semantics like you said. LOTRO did a good job where they had "quests" for each zone. Then "Chapter Quests" that drove the story.

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

I"m not sure what you dislike? You just want one quest at a time and no side quests? Similar to a single player RPG?

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

There"s no reason from the players point of view for quest limitations. However from a developer point of view it allows you to tell a story more precisely I would imagine. Also as a player, some people can load up on quests and begin to become overwelmed with things to do and end up...

@splok Fair points. To each his own. And my definition of Basic Game is whatever it takes to reach max level and get a few shiny rewards along the way. Running single group dungeons is the maximum tier of effort. --- On rewarding NOT dying. I think LOTRO had a pretty cool titling system...

Yes MUDs had loot linking and instancing. I even played ones with battlegrounds and arenas.

Well if you want to go deep those ideas were in place a long time ago in thousands of different MUDs.

Incoming semantics argument. Immersion is the feeling of being inside the game world. It"s that simple. Anything that reminds you that you have a mortgage or a 2 year old son ruins immersion and therefore is bad in an RPG. Or atleast that"s what some people would argue.

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Ok playing the immersion card, is it immersive allowing innkeepers to repair your stuff as well as a than a blacksmith or whatever? I don"t really get what you"re saying.

Why does every MMORPG have to be immersive? Why can"t we just have fun and kill stuff?

You"re not choosing level of risk, you"re dealing with the risk of dieing AGAIN based on what you have around you. You"re being forced into a situation. You also have to rely on other people. Successful game these days will have every portion of the basic game accessible no matter how many...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

How did EQ give you choice and WOW doesn"t because of death penalty? I think EQ gives you less choice because of the "risk" involved. I suffer through enough risk driving home from work every day. Make the game as hard as you want but do it without tedium. Loss of XP/Gear just forces you to...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

For death penalties. It depends on what game you"re going for whether it"s PVP or PVE. I don"t think you"re going to aim to make a game "niche", so you want it to be appealing on a large scale (Don"t debate the scale, just go with it). I"ll stick with with PVE since PVP deaths can have all...

As long as I can actively improve my character while playing it. Skill vs. Class systems mean nothing to me. It"s basically the same thing almost.
  34. D

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Good point. But it varies from game to game. EQ2 you have the mentor system. WOW you just level quickly and gear separates you at the high end. EVE you"re useless anyway for a few months, plus you really don"t improve your character actively anyway. Unfortunately there will always be a...

I don"t think you can compare the skill system in EVE to any class or skill system in a fantasy MMO.

Only argument you"ve made is because you don"t think it"s fair if people with PDA"s can"t do it when others have to use a keyboard and a mouse. That still doesn"t make sense to me.

2bit you do realize that you"re arguing against people using a cell phone for the auction house right? A fucking auction bid. Get a grip on priorities and perspective. There is no disadvantage at all. You log in using one type of media and you do shit in a game. Whats the big deal?
  38. D

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

I agree with Tad. Who cares if you do stuff on your phone or on your computer? I don"t think it makes a difference. Since when are people complaining about unfair bidding wars? Yeesh. You sound like THK about EQ2 Housing.
