You can have one million gold and have enough gear to clear mp0 pretty reliably. Upgrades per piece are like 2mil each, then 8mil, then around 20mil each. There's always things you can snipe on the AH too. I'm at the 200mil+ per upgrade point and have saved up about 70mil towards the upgrade...
