It's definitely the superior mod. The original Long War fit very naturally into the campaign of X-Com whereas Long War 2 felt a bit more forced, like 'how are we going to fit our ideas and the new X-Com 2 style of gameplay together' because everyone expected them to make a sequel of their own...
