I come from an engineering background.. so everything I do is related to C\C++, machine, assembly. Probably not the best source of knowledge. I still think C provided me with a great foundation in which I can pick up any language now relatively quickly and efficiently.

Even though it's dated and many disagree, I always recommend people start with C/C++. I guess it depends what you want to do with programming though.
