Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Disney has massive cash reserves ($13B atm with access to more) and some of the most resilient IP in the entertainment industry. It's fun to have some schadenfreude over their pain, but Disney collapsing likely means capitalism as we know it has collapsed. They'll be one of the last ones standing.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Two reasons for me. First, there was real loss and sacrifice with the protagonists, which is something Disney movies in particular usually like to avoid. I liked that there was tension knowing shit would probably end badly. Second, it contained the single purest Star Wars sequence since the OT:

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Forget Rose, give me a Paige Tico prequel, that's something I might watch. TLJ went screaming downhill after her sacrifice in the beginning of the film. The music-only sequence of her part makes for a better movie than the whole:

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

I watched it this weekend. Virtually all of the things that sucked about it were related to trying to un-fuck what Johnson did in TLJ. His ideas might have worked in a vaccum, but you don't pick the 8th chapter in a sprawling, 9 chapter story to take bold new directions. This led to awkwardly...

    Marvel Universe stuff

No actor or actress can salvage a horrible script and terrible writing. Portman was also unwatchable as Padme, but pretty amazing in Black Swan (think that's where she won her Oscar?) and V for Vendetta. I'm looking forward to see what Waititi can do with this. The comic was decent.

Probably didn't help that my daughter's the same age as Laura, but this fucking gutted me

    Shazam! (2019)

It was the opposite for me - expected a decent movie, thought it was garbage. It was just a weird mixture of almost-funny, not-badass, not-cute etc. I know the cheese is intentional, but unlike Aquaman (which I recognize as just bad film but I genuinely enjoyed), I couldn't get into this. Oh well.

    Captain Marvel (2019)

I keep seeing anecdotes and screenshots of empty theaters. Is there some kind of suspicion that box office numbers are being fudged? Not sure I understand the point. We can debate this thing being trash or Larson having the emotional range of a walnut as the lead character, but I'm pretty sure...

    Captain Marvel (2019)

Just watched it, solid middle of the road Marvel movie. Young Fury and Coulson were a fucking trip. Larson was better than I thought, that deadpan delivery played much better in full scenes, especially with SLJ. For all of the commentary surrounding the film, nothing felt hamfisted or forced in...

    Captain Marvel (2019)

This thing pulled in $21M domestically on Thursday, which crushed other Marvel movies (another $44M global). I think much of this is simply tied to a serious thirst for Avengers Endgame hype. ANY movie that was going to serve as a bridge to the end of this phase for Marvel was going to have...

    The Umbrella Academy

There were so many great scenes. Watched with the wife and she was dying at Klaus pretending to be Five's dad at Meritech, between him striking just the right balance of crazy, the terrified look on the lab guy's face, and Five going from "what the fuck" to that knowing smirk after getting...

2018-19 NHL Season Thread - Caps were not suck last year edition

Fair enough. I never thought that the Leafs would be able to dump David Clarkson, yet it happened. Zaitsev is negative value at that $ but you're right, you never know - I think the worst part of his deal is the term (doesn't expire until 2024).

2018-19 NHL Season Thread - Caps were not suck last year edition

I actually remember reading that Reddit thread. The debate pretty much plays out in the comments so I won't repeat them here except to highlight the most upvoted one that compares Marner to the last player top top 100 points before their 2nd contract (Ovechkin - ~17% of cap). Bottom line is that...

2018-19 NHL Season Thread - Caps were not suck last year edition

Marleau is signed through 19-20 with a cap hit of $6.25M. Zaitsez has an immovable contract through 23-24 at $4.5M. Also, there's no way Marner signs for less than $10M, even for a shorter term as is speculated. Basically, the only substantial cap relief is going to come from Gardiner, who...

Into my veins pls. Add to that the portability on a Switch. I was completely done with D3 until it came out on that platform and I could plan in airports and hotels (now casually doing my second season on it).

    Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

This was really fucking good. I'm shocked Sony didn't fuck it up in some way. It scratched every itch for me. Me and my comic-nerd friend that I watched it with talked about it for an hour straight after we walked out.

    Aquaman (2018)

Yeah I can see its merits as a so-bad-it's-good film. I think most of that is related to Momoa and Heard. Despite having shitty chemistry and forced lines that reminded me of Finn/Rose, it sure helped that Arthur/Mera were sexy as fuck and not the ripened cankers found in TLJ. You could smell...

    ARPG suggestions for co-op?

Absolutely loved Borderlands co-op experience with buddies. One of my favorite franchises and a total surprise (to me at least) in terms of scratching that ARPG itch in an FPS setting. I know you mentioned not liking D3, but it remains one of the most polished and streamlined options out there...

People are overcomplicating this. Conor and his crew went hard after Khabib's camp, assaulting the bus, shit talking his dad, cutting up one of their boy's (lawsuit pending), triggering a police investigation etc. I mean shit, scores are settled in hockey and other leagues, forget...

    Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

I also think all bets are off if Disney (now that they own both IPs) decides to recreate the Avengers vs. X-men story from the comics, where Thor leads the Avengers against the Phoenix Force. Even Hugh Jackman admitted how juicy a cross-over would be for all involved.

    NBA 2017-2018 Season Thread

Raps fans don't expect him to stay and honestly, it doesn't matter. One important fact to keep in mind is the core of the roster only had a 2 year lifespan anyway (Kyle, Ibaka, Jonas, Miles all expire) This basically raises the ceiling for one of those years and probably moves up the overall...

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

This kind of generalization is irritating. A bad script and plot can sabotage any actor. Natalie Portman, who has been incredible in other movies, didn't stand a chance as Padme. I didn't mind TFA as much as others here. More to your point, I thought Daisy Ridley as Rey was fucking bad-ass and...
